The drawing to
the left is a
sketch of a cross-section from a rat's brain. The section was sliced
using a freezing microtome, and then a nissl stain was used to define
certain characteristic areas in the cross-section. The coronal slice of the rat brain is about 50 microns thick and is found
on Plate 18 of the stereotaxic atlas. The terminology of the various
parts of the brain are listed below, followed by their abbreviations
underneath.
