University of Scranton Quick Facts
Soccer

Matt Pivirotto, Head Coach
Matt Pivirotto made quite a name for himself while a player at Bishop Neumann High School and Lycoming College in his hometown of Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Now, he's trying to make another name for himself, this time as a head coach of The University of Scranton men's soccer program, whose proud tradition includes eight Middle Atlantic Conference titles and two NCAA Division III championship game appearances in its 31-year history.

The Royals struggled through a 3-16 season in Pivirotto's first season as head coach in 1999, but the record doesn't truly reflect his impact on the program, especially on the defensive end.  Scranton allowed an average of less than two goals a game, lost seven matches by a goal and five others by two goals.

Defense, however, is the last thing Pivirotto was known for as a player.  At Bishop Neumann, Pivirott earned regional all-America honors after scoring a school-record 77 goals.  He continue his offensive skills at Lycoming, where he finished his career as the Warriors all-time leading scorer with 56 goals and 22 assists for 134 total points en route to earning all-Middle Atlantic Conference honors four times, including the conference's player of the year award in 1996.  He was also a two-time all-region selection.

He earned a bachelor of science degree in business finance from Lycoming in 1998.

2000 Season Outlook

For a player known for his offensive skills, Matt Pivirotto concentrated his efforts in the opposite direction in his first season as head coach of The University of Scranton men's soccer team last fall.

Pivirotto, a former standout at Lycoming College where he ended his career as the Warriors all-time leading scorer, went about his business of re-establishing the Royals in the Freedom League of the Middle Atlantic Conference by focusing on defense.   Scranton responded by holding its opponents to an average of less than two goals a game, thanks, in part, to the play of goalkeeper Trevor Pericas, who had a respectable 1.93 goals against average and a .718 save percentage.

Pericas, along with defenders Kevin O'Meara, Kurt Schollin and Eric Kunsinger, will once again be called upon the carry the Royals defensively during the upcoming 2000 season.  Pivirotto's biggest concern, however, will come on the offensive end, as he looks to rejuvenate an attack that managed only 12 goals during last year's 3-16 season.

He'll welcome back five of the Royals' top seven scorers among the 17 lettermen returning from a year ago.  Sophomore Chris Poli, and senior Kevin O'Reagan, a native of Ireland, will be called upon to increase their output from their forward positions, as will junior Bob Leichte and seniors Mike Merrilees and Joseph Percontino at midfield.

The Royals will look to return to the Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Corporation (MASCAC) playoffs for the first time since 1998 and to unseat Freedom League champion Drew University in the process.  An 18-match schedule, which features non-conference matches against Albright, Elizabethtown and Rowan, should help Scranton in its quest to win its fourth Freedom Conference title and its first since winning back-to-back crowns in 1996 and 1997.
