Head Coach
Jud Holdredge

Jud Holdredge faced quite a challenge when he took over as head coach of The University of Scranton volleyball program in 2002.

Just days before the start of pre-season practice, he inherited a team that was coming off its eighth straight season of at least 20 wins.  With little time to institute his own ideas, he still managed to lead the Royals to another 20-win season, thanks, in part, to a late season rally that saw Scranton win eight of its final 12 matches.   The Royals put together another late-season run in 2003 that resulted in a 21-14 overall record, including dramatic 3-2 wins over FDU-Florham and regular-season champion Lycoming College to win their fourth Freedom Conference championship and advance to the NCAA Division III tournament for the third time in school history.  In 2005, he led the Royals to their fifth Freedom Conference championship and fourth NCAA Division III tournament appearaance.  This past season, Scranton advanced to the conference's title match before dropping a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Lycoming College to put the wraps on a 27-8 campaign.  His overall record of 116-64 (.644) includes five consecutive seasons of at least 20 victories.  Scranton has now won at least 20 matches in each of the last 13 years.

A two-time Freedom Conference Coach of the Year selection (2005, 20060, Holdredge’s background as a player, coach and official made him a natural fit for the position.

In high school, he played for his father, the legendary Ernie Holdredge, at Tunkhannock Area High School, where the Tigers participated in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) state tournament four times and won the championship in 1972, finished third in 1973 and 1974 and fifth in 1971.  The elder Holdredge led Tunkhannock Area to 249 wins, 25 PIAA district titles and one state and one national championship.  Jud’s next exposure to another highly regarded coach came at Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek, Michigan, where he played for Mick Haley, a member of the 1968 United States men’s Olympic volleyball team who later went on to coach the U.S. women’s Olympic volleyball team in 1980.

After eventually earning his bachelor’s degree at then Mansfield State College, Holdredge returned to Tunkhannock Area as girls’ junior varsity coach in 1978 and served in this capacity until 1983, when he took over the Tigers’ boys’ program, a position he still holds today.   He has been twice named the Wyoming Valley Volleyball Coaches Association (WVVCA) Coach of the Year (1991, 2000) and has coached three teams in the men’s open division of the Keystone State Games, winning two gold medals and a bronze.

Prior to his appointment at the University, Holdredge served as a high school and collegiate volleyball official for 28 years.  He has worked 20 PIAA district championships and six state title matches.  He has also been a USA Volleyball official, working games in which the US national team was involved.

Jud and his wife, Ellen, reside in Kingsley.  They are the parents of two sons:  Adam and Ty.
