Gully Low Jazz Band

Taking inspiration from Louis Armstrong and the other immortal musicians of his period, and totally dedicated to the preservation of the great music of the 1920’s and 30’s, the Gully Low Jazz Band is keeping lit the musical flame which warms hearts worldwide and lights fires under dancing feet. The ensemble has garnered pr inted praise in The New York Times, The New York Post, The Village Voice, Time Out New York, The Star-Ledger, and many others. 

Formed in 1980 by tuba and bass saxophonist David Ostwald, the band has made numerous appearances at New York’s Lincoln Center, as well as at jazz clubs and societies throughout New York City and up and down the East Coast. On July 4, 2000,  ; in celebration of the Louis Armstrong Centennial, the ensemble performed with The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra to excited crowds of tens of thousands at N.J.’s Liberty State Park. 

The group’s fourth recording, “Blues In Our Heart”, was released in October 1999. Its second recording (with blues great Big Joe Turner) was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1986. The group is currently engaged in an open-ended run every Tuesday evening at new York City's famed jazz venue, B irdland.
