David Ostwald, tubaist, was raised in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. He began studying piano at age seven, and tuba at age eleven. Solely a classical musicians until his junior year at The University of Chicago, Mr. Ostwald formed his first jazz band at that time, inspired by the music of noble jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Bix Beiderbecke, Jelly Roll Morton, and their contemporaries.

In addition to his numerous recording appearances, Mr. Ostwald has performed with a variety of artists, including Wynton Marsalis, Randy Sandke, Nicholas Payton, Dick Hyman, Jon Faddis, Benny Waters, Woody Allen, Leon Redbone, and the Oxford University Orchestral Society under the direction of Sir Jack Westrup.&nb sp;

Ostwald co-produced a half-hour Armstrong retrospective for the ABC Radio networks, a program which has aired nationwide. He has also written extensively about jazz music, including articles for The New York Times, Commentary, and various CD liner notes. For the last two seasons,  Mr. Ostwald has presented jazz education programs for children as part of Lincoln Center's "Meet the Artist" series. He serves on the boards of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation and the Louis Armstrong House and Archives.

Since 1980, Mr. Ostwald has led the Gully Low Jazz Band, whose second album (with blues great Big Joe Turner) was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1986, and whose fourth album Blues In Our Heart (Nagel-Heyer label) was released to critical acclaim in 1999. The Gully Low Jazz Band is currently engaged in an open-ended run every Tuesday evening at New York City's famed jazz club, Birdland.
