Graduate Programs in Counseling

The Department of Counseling and Human Services offers graduate programs leading to the master's degree in Community Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, and School Counseling.

Accreditation

CACREP

The Community Counseling Program and the School Counseling Program are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

The School Counseling Program is part of the University of Scranton's education program that is accredited by Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE)and by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

CORE

The Rehabilitation Counseling Program is accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE).

Certification

NBCC

Graduates of the Community Counseling and School Counseling program meet all requirements for certification as a National Certified Counselor (NCC). Students may apply to the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) to take a national certification examination during their final semester of study. Students who pass the examination will be granted certification upon graduation. After two years of post-master's degree supervised counseling experience, graduates of the School Counseling program may apply to NBCC for the School Counseling Specialty Certificate.

The School Counseling program meets the standards for certification as either an elementary or secondary school counselor established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Upon receipt of degree, students are eligible to receive the Education Specialist I Certificate in elementary or secondary school counseling. Certain students who already possess a master's degree may desire certification only. In these cases, their previous study and experience will be reviewed and a program of study developed.

CRCC

Graduates of the Rehabilitation Counseling program meet all requirements for certification as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC). Students may apply to the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC) to take a national certification examination during the final semester of study. Students who pass the examination will be granted certification upon graduation from the program.

Licensure

Professional Counselors can be licensed in Pennsylvania under Act 136 of 1998. For the latest information on licensure of professional counselors please visit the State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors web site or the web site of the Pennsylvania Counseling Association.
