Monthly Meeting – minutes
April 6, 2003

The Dexter Hanley student government met on April 6, 2003. President, Beverly O’Hora brought the meeting to order at 5:10 p.m.

President Beverly O’Hora gave the opening prayer and noted the success of the recent government sponsored trip to Lancaster to see the stage production of “Daniel, A Dream, A Den, A Deliverer.”

In attendance: President Beverly O’Hora, Secretary Wendy Thomas, Corresponding Secretary Dawn Lavelle, LeAnne Moran, Mary Kay Moran, Kim Bochicchio, Colleen Casey, John Major, Rose Morgan, Kathy Elkins, Leo Lynn and Judy Kleeman-Doherty.

Absent members: Vice President Theresa Sandrowicz, Nancy Kizer, Treasurer Betsy Minello, Nick Mielo, Dr. Elizabeth Jacob, Dr. Wayne Cunningham and Miriam Velazquez.

Minutes for last meeting were approved: 1st – Colleen Casey, 2nd – LeAnne Moran.

No treasurer’s report available.

Nick Mielo was unable to attend- no report on the U of S Council meeting.

New Business

1.     The annual children of Dexter Hanley student’s Easter parade and party has been promised a donation from Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.  They have generously offered 4 dozen fresh doughnuts for the participants to enjoy.  Also, Gertrude Hawk Candy Company has donated a $10 gift certificate toward the purchase of candy for the children.  The ARA catering service will be providing the remaining fare.  There will be crafts for the children.  The government voted on and passed the hiring of entertainer Bill Frye to sing for the children.  John Major has offered to attend as “the Easter Bunny!”   All Dexter Hanley students and their children are welcome.  Fun will be had by all!

2.     Graduation Dinner on May 9,2003 from 6-11pm. - The location for the party is the Radisson Hotel’s small ballroom, Scranton. The menu was discussed and voted on. Nominations for Faculty and Advisor award card will be mailed out in the same envelope as the invitations for the Graduate Dinner.

3.     The dean has approved leadership-training seminars.  First come, first serve.

4.     Dexter Hanley College is in search of a DEAN.  Student government Vice President Theresa Sandrowicz is participating in the recruitment committee.  There are 18 prospective candidates at this time.  Dean Cunningham will be acting Dean until August 1, 2003.

5.     Kathy Elkins is serving on the campus Presidential search committee.  There will be 2 interviews conducted on-campus.      

·       Candidate 1 – Tuesday, April 8 in Brennan 228

·       Candidate 2 – Thursday, April 10 in Brennan 228

Both candidates are Jesuits and are presently from Georgetown University.

6.     Open House- May 4, 2003 from 3:30- 5pm in Brennan.  Volunteers are needed.  “Graduate and Adult Information Session.”

7.     Dexter Hanley Student Government Officer Elections – Nominations for the 2003-2004 government officers were offered:

·       President – Beverly O’Hora nominated Theresa Sandrowicz and Kathy Elkins nominated LeAnne Moran.

·       Vice President – Judy Kleeman-Doherty nominated Roseanne Morgan and Kim Bochicchio nominated Dawn Lavelle.

·       Recording Secretary – Dawn Lavelle nominated Wendy Thomas and Beverly O’Hora nominated Roseanne Morgan.

·       Corresponding Secretary – Dawn Lavelle nominated Leanne Moran and Kathy Elkins nominated Theresa Sandrowicz.

·       Treasurer – Colleen Casey nominated Mary Kay Moran and Kathy Elkins nominated Wendy Thomas.

 

Election ballots will be sent out shortly to all Dexter Hanley students.

 

Old Business

1.     Cookbook – Requests for recipes were mailed out to all Dexter Hanley students. Returned recipes will be sent to the publishing company on 4-7-03. 

2.     Spring Trip to New York City– It has been noted that Dexter Hanley has reserved 3 video buses for the trip. The tickets for the LION KING have been reserved. The tickets will be dealt out on a first come, first serve basis. The cost of tickets for participants is $25 through Dexter Hanley (normally $55 at the box office). The flyers about the trip have been mailed out to all students and the tickets for the show are nearly completely sold out.  Space on the buses is about ˝ reserved.  The date for the trip is April 26th, 2003 with the buses leaving the University at 7:30am, to return the same night at approximately 10:00pm. “This is always a great trip, so be sure to reserve your spot soon after receiving the announcement during the spring semester! The seats always go fast but there are still a few seats left!!!!”

3.     Pet Therapy update- Put on hold.

4.     Students and government members have the option of ordering fleece pullovers in charcoal or black - $22, fleece full-zipper front in charcoal or black - $25, denim in beige - $15, or denim in dark blue - $10. Sizes available are small, medium, large, X-large, and XX-large. All articles will display the University/Dexter Hanley insignia on the front. Flyers will be sent out to all Dexter Hanley students.

5.     Backpack to Briefcases Etiquette Dinner- Kathy Elkins attended and gave a brief report.  She stated that the food was excellent, and that the main focus of the dinner was to offer proper dining etiquette tips to prepare graduates for occasions where they may be in a fine dinning situation.  Also, it was noted that there were door prizes awarded.

6.     A Spring Break trip was conducted to Lancaster, Pa. The trip included a stage show of “Daniel, A Dream, A Den, A Deliverer.”  The overall response from students who attended was positive.  Discussion has begun to look into planning a similar trip for the 2004 spring semester.

7.     Spring Newsletter, “The Royal Way” – The committee has announced that the spring 2003 edition is complete and will be mailed out shortly to all Dexter Hanley students.

8.     Hand in Hand – Kim Bochicchio and Leo Lynn are in charge of organization.  They stated “all preparations are finished.”  They will be able to accommodate 50 participants.

9.     The yearbook is still in need of Dexter Hanley pictures.  Submit soon.

After assuring that all old business had been discussed, and no additional new business was brought to the table, President Beverly O’Hora brought the meeting to a close at 6:10pm.

Dexter Hanley will next meet on May 4, 2003 at 5pm.  All Dexter Hanley students are encouraged to apply for membership in the government. (314 Brennan Hall)
