New Business

  1. “Feed A Friend” – Thanksgiving Food Charity- Considerations of donating $100 to Sister Adrian’s charity was voted on and passed. The money will go to create four $25 food gift baskets containing “all the trimmings” for local needy families.

  2. “Fee A Friend” - Christmas Food Charity- Considerations of donating $100 to Sister Adrian’s charity was voted on and passed. The money will go to create four $25 food gift baskets containing Christmas dinner for local needy families.

  3. Toys for Tots – Once again, Dexter Hanley is supportive of the Toys for Tots program for Christmas, 2002. All students are asked to donate NEW, unwrapped toys at the Christmas party on December 13th.

  4. Spring Newsletter, “The Royal Way”- A committee needs to be assembled for work on the Spring 2003 newsletter. Volunteers for the committee, articles and/or pictures are needed. Feel free to submit articles or pictures to John Major, Kathy Elkins, Colleen Casey or Wendy Thomas: Room 122, Dexter Hanley mailbox.

  5. Hand-n-Hand Program – Cancelled for fall, 2002. Will resume in spring, 2003.

  6. Fall trip, 2003 – no update.

  7. Graduation Dinner, May 2003 - A suggested location for the party has been offered – the Radison ballroom, Scranton. It was noted that if this location is voted upon, that the room would not be large enough to accommodate a live band. It was suggested that the consideration of using the band, The Poets, as entertainment at a Dexter Hanley function be reconsidered for the Christmas party in 2004. The issues surrounding the location and entertainment will be further discussed at the next meeting.

  8. It is noted that volunteers are needed to act as orientation, 2003 aides. Orientation is scheduled for January 23rd, and much help is needed in welcoming our new Dexter Hanley students. If you can help, please contact Beverly O’Hora as soon as possible.

Old Business – updates

  1. Mystery Theatre Dinner, Saturday, October 26 at 9:00pm- The Mystery Dinner was held in the Gunster building due to a last minute change, rather than Brennan Hall as originally planned. There were mixed reviews by those attending about the overall experience. While it was reported that the food was very good, the last minute location change caused some confusion and problems in the theatre aspect of the program. Also, it was noted that participants felt the 9pm starting time was a bit late for dinner. If this activity is discussed for next year, these concerns will be taken into consideration.

  2. The Dexter Hanley Newsletter – The newsletter has been compiled. Although the government had hoped to have it published and sent out to DHC students by the end of October, some last minute alterations prevented that release. Wendy Thomas joined the committee and did some last minute editing. The print has gone to press. Students should be receiving a copy by mail before the weekend of November 23rd.

  3. Christmas Party 2002 –During the last meeting, a proposal was put on the table to acquire the services of a photographer that offers pictures with live reindeer. The subject was again discussed and the economic aspects considered. It was found that this service was one that the government could provide for those attending the Christmas party. The proposition was voted on and passed. At the request of the Dean, the theme for the Christmas festivity has been changed to “Woodland Christmas,” formally “Woodland Creatures.”

  4. Cookbook – More discussion is needed before voting on the cookbook. Kathy Elkins will be examining the needs of DHC in reference to the project, and compiling an approximation of cost.

  5. Spring Trip – It has been noted that Dexter Hanley has reserved 3 video buses for the trip. The tickets for the LION KING have been reserved. There are only 45 tickets on reserve, and they will be dealt on a first come, first serve basis. The cost of tickets for participants is $25 through Dexter Hanley (normally $55 at the box office). The date for the trip is April 26th, 2003. “This is always a great trip, so be sure to reserve your spot soon after receiving the announcement during the spring semester! The seats always go fast!!!”

  6. Yearbook – Pictures are needed for inclusion. Contact Beverly O’Hora, room 119 – O’Hara Hall.

  7. Pet Therapy update- Kathy Elkins has called the Humane Society and has received a positive outcome. They expressed interest in working on the project. Further discussion is required as to scheduling of the event. Kathy will be contacting them again after the date has been decided.

  8. The Halloween party/parade for the children of Dexter Hanley students was held October 26, from 3:00pm – 6:00pm. It was noted that the festivities received “rave reviews” from parents of the children attending. One suggestion was that for next years Halloween party/parade a donation box should be set up, as where there was some confusion over where donations should be made at this year’s activity. Though more children attended than originally anticipated, the Halloween committee came through with last minute preparations to accommodate all of the children. It is noted that approximately 35 youngsters were entertained by crafts, candy and face painting. Also, the children did some entertaining of their own while visiting the Jesuit residence. Reports by attending members state that the children enjoyed dancing and singing and that fun was had by all. “DHC student government would like to thank the Jesuits for participating in our children’s Halloween celebration.” Also, great job Halloween committee!!

  9. The Dexter Hanley shirts update – The government will be acquiring polo shirts in the color purple, to be worn at functions, such as fall and spring trips, as where members can be easily recognizable to students needing assistance. Students and government members have the option of ordering fleece pullovers in charcoal or black - $22, fleece full-zipper front in charcoal or black - $25, denim in beige - $15, or denim in dark blue - $10. Sizes available are small, medium, large, X-large, and XX-large. All articles will display the University/Dexter Hanley insignia on the front. Articles are on display in O’Hara Hall for your consideration. Orders taken till November 26th, contact Beverly O’Hara, room 119 – O’Hara Hall. Pickup at the Christmas party or during finals week.
