Monthly Meeting - minutes

October 20, 2002

 

            The Dexter Hanley student government met on October 20, 2002.  President, Beverly O’Hora brought the meeting to order at 5:02 p.m.

 

In attendance:  President Beverly O’Hora, Vice President Theresa Sandrowicz, Secretary Wendy Thomas, Corresponding Secretary Dawn Lavelle, Colleen Casey, LeAnne Moran, Mary Kay Moran, Nancy Kizer, Judy Kleeman, John Major, Rose Morgan, Kathy Elkins, and Leo Lynn.

 

Absent members:  Treasurer Betsy Minello, Liz Jacob, Kim Bochicchio, Tim Astleford, Gerard Bednash, Charlene Brudnicki, Brian Catalano, Lili Houck, Thomas Leo, Elaine Malinowski, Nick Mielo, Lynn Paskert, Pearl Torres, Ruth Wanamaker, Chris West, Chris Zychal, Dr. Wayne Cunningham.

 

The minutes were read and a motion to accept the minutes for approval was called.

President Beverly O’Hora gave the opening prayer and then welcomed our guest speaker, Virginia Schwalm from the University of Scranton Counseling Center.

Ms. Schwalm spoke about the various counseling services provided and was interested in hearing from Dexter Hanley students about our needs.  Members of the government offered suggestions about available times for appointments that would serve the adult students.  Each attending government member filled out an assessment-survey form.  The subject of the form was awareness of the services offered and what individual members felt are important services that they might access if offered.  It was announced that all counseling services are available to any student who desires them free of charge as part of the paid tuition.

 

No treasurer’s report available.

 

Nick Mielo was unable to attend- no report on the U of S Council meeting.

 

New Business

  1. Government member, Jerry Bednash has resigned.
  2. First ideas were discussed for a fall trip, 2003.  Kathy Elkins will check into information about “Sight and Sound.”  An update will be presented at a later date.
  3. In preparing for the 2003 graduation dinner, it was suggested that the government should reserve the entertainment group The Poets.  Further discussion at a later date is required.
  4. An idea was discussed for Dexter Hanley to compile a cookbook.  Students of Dexter Hanley would submit their favorite recipes for inclusion in the book.  The book would be offered for sale or given as gifts to graduates.  Nancy Kizer and Kathy Elkins will be looking into the matter further.  Further discussion is required.

 

 

Old Business - updates

  1. Mystery Theatre Dinner, Saturday, October 26 at 9:00pm- Correction to last months information – the Mystery Dinner is being held on the 5th floor of Brennan Hall.
  2. The Dexter Hanley Newsletter – After being reviewed by the Dean of Dexter Hanley, the newsletter was found to need additional editing/revising.  However, plans are to have publishing and mailing by the end of October.  Also, a committee needs to be assembled for work on the Spring 2003 newsletter.  Volunteers for the committee, and articles/pictures are desired by all government members.  Feel free to submit articles or pictures to John Major, Kathy Elkins or Colleen Casey: Room 122, Dexter Hanley mailbox.
  3. Christmas Party 2002 – The possibility of having pictures taken with commemorative frames as student favors was discussed.  The party committee expressed an interest in acquiring the services of a photographer that offers pictures with live reindeer.  The subject will be discussed further at the next meeting and voted on.  As of this time, the purposed theme is “Woodland Creatures.”
  4. Ronald McDonald walk/race – Dexter Hanley took first place in the category of a club.

4.  Trustee’s Day – February 4, 2003 – no update.

  1. Spring Trip – It has been noted that Dexter Hanley will be reserving 3 video buses for the trip.  Kathy Elkins and Theresa Sandrowicz are working on the ticket info for the Lion King.
  1. O’Hara, room 120 for study – no update.
  1. Yearbook – no update.
  2. Pet Therapy update- Kathy Elkins is still working on the necessary contacts.
  3. The Halloween party/parade for the children of Dexter Hanley students is set for October 26, from 3:00pm – 6:00pm.  It was noted that the refreshments had been ordered, candy bags prepared and a committee was formed to perform face painting.
  4. The Dexter Hanley shirts update – Choices of Polo or fleece.  Government – color purple, to be worn at functions, such as fall and spring trips, as where members can be easily recognizable to students needing assistance.  Students – assorted colors available.

After assuring that all old business had been discussed, and no additional new business was brought to the table, President Beverly O’Hora brought the meeting to a close at 6:34pm.

 

Dexter Hanley will next meet on November 17, at 5pm.  All students of Dexter Hanley are encouraged to attend and applications for membership in the government will be available.   (314 Brennan Hall)

 

Note:  The best selling author, Matthew Kelly, who has provided motivational speeches to the university students for the past few years, has provided Dexter Hanley with a copy of his latest book.  It is available for loan to Dexter Hanley government students.  See Beverly O’Hora if interested.
