Hardware Services

The Computer Maintenance Center

The Computer Maintenance Center of Desktop and Instructional Resources department is responsible for all hardware services that include delivery and setting up new computers, special events setups, equipment moves and repairs to hardware and peripherals for faculty, staff and lab computers owned by the University of Scranton.

Reporting Problems:

All University of Scranton faculty and staff can report issues to the Desktop and Instructional Resources department via the Help Desk regarding any hardware or peripherals repair.

Repairs:

Repairs are attempted to be done in the timeliest way as possible. Most problems are repaired using on hand parts. Units that are still under manufacture warranty are called in for service parts, however, every attempt is made to have the unit operational by using on hand parts before warranty replacements are secured. Specialty equipment such as high-end laser printers, scanners, and etc. may require more time for parts procurement.

Replacement Parts:

A supply of on hand repair parts is maintained by the Computer Maintenance Center. These parts are a combination of common repair parts along with some parts that are more directed towards specialty equipment on campus.

Equipment Loans:

Should office equipment be in need of lengthy repairs or hard to find parts, loaner units can sometimes be arranged. These pieces of equipment may not be of the same type or quality of the original. (For example - processor speed may be slower or laser printers temporarily replaced with an ink jet)

Special Events:

Setup of computer hardware is available for special events. Requestors are asked to make their requests for hardware several weeks before the event and to provide detailed information as to room layout, start and end times, and also earliest time the room is available for setup. When considering where the computers are to be placed, please verify that power and network connections are easily accessible and close by. It is also necessary when booking the location for the event to supply adequate time before and after the event for setup and cleanup of equipment.

Equipment Moves:

Requests for equipment moves should be made as far in advance as possible. Small moves for office renovations (1or 2 machines) can be done later in the afternoon, the day before the work begins and will be reconnected when the office has the furniture in place. We also do small moves to other buildings or offices in the same building. Large moves of entire departments are handled through the Physical Plant. We disconnect the systems prior to the movers coming and reconnect when all furniture and equipment is at the new location.
