ROYALAIR Wireless Access

Introduction
The Information Resources Division has deployed wireless network services based on the IEEE 802.11b specifications.  The wireless network provides a means of accessing Web-based University instructional and informational resources and the Internet without connecting to a port using an Ethernet cable.  You must have a wireless network adapter installed in your laptop computer.

Computing Policies
Wireless Networking users must comply with the Wireless Air Space Policy and all other University Computing Policies.

Need Assistance?
Contact the Technology Support Center at 941-HELP if you have any questions or need assistance.

Hardware Requirements
To establish a wireless connection, you need a laptop computer with an industry standard Wi-Fi compliant 802.11b wireless adapter.  802.11g adapters are backward-compatible with 802.11b and are acceptable.  802.11a adapters are not compatible and should be avoided.

Some computers have a wireless adapter built-in, so you don't need an external adapter.  External wireless adapters should be installed according to the manufacturer's instructions.  Most come with their own driver software.

Software Requirements
We have implemented measures to make the wireless network more secure from viruses and worms that can damage your computer and inhibit the network.  In order to connect a computer to the wireless network, you will be required to authenticate using your E-mail username and password.  Network access will be granted if your computer meets the requirements listed below.  If your computer is not secure, you will have limited network access and will be guided through steps to address any security issues.

Commuter Students
Commuters can go to the Technology Support Center in Alumni Memorial Hall and pick up a ResNet CD that contains the required software.  After you connect, you need to install additional upgrades before you are allowed access to the wireless network.

Faculty and Staff
Faculty and staff computers (typically laptops) must be set up in accordance with University standards.

Personal Digital Assistants
Pocket PC, Windows Mobile, or Palm OS
handheld devices with internal or add-on wireless adapters can connect to the wireless network.  You will be required to authenticate using your E-mail username and password at the beginning of every session.  We cannot guarantee compatibility of the Web browsers in these devices with the University's applications.

E-mail Restrictions
E-mail sent from the wireless network must come from an authenticated source.  The University's outgoing mail server is blocked on the wireless network and E-mail clients (e.g. Eudora, Netscape, Outlook, Outlook Express, Pegasus, Thunderbird) cannot send mail.  You must use Express Mail.

Configure Your Wireless Adapter
This is the most difficult part of accessing the wireless network to explain.  Not because the process itself is difficult, but because each manufacturer does things differently.  Since there are many manufacturers, it is impossible to describe each individual setup.  We will highlight the settings that are specific to our wireless network

Your adapter may have a configuration utility that displays all the relevant settings in one place or you may have to find the settings in the properties of your wireless network adapter under the Network Control Panel.  You will need to determine this from the documentation that came with your wireless adapter or computer.

Using Clean Access Agent
You will be forced to install the Clean Access Agent the first time you connect to the wireless network.  After that, the Clean Access Agent login screen pops up automatically when it detects the wireless network.  The User Name is your E-mail username and the Password is your E-mail password.  After you click Login, your computer is checked for the security requirements.  Additional messages describe any deficiencies and most offer a link to a Web page to correct the situation.  Operating system requirements may require additional assistance from the Technology Support Center.  Periodically, upgrades to the Clean Access Agent are made available and you will be notified after you click Login.  For required upgrades, you click OK to continue; you can postpone optional upgrades by clicking No but it is recommended that you upgrade.

Configure TCP/IP For Wireless Access
Most likely, the TCP/IP configuration for your wireless adapter will be configured automatically and correctly.  However, you should check it using the appropriate instructions below.

Configure TCP/IP For Windows 2000

  1. Right-click My Network Places
  2. Click Properties
  3. You will see one or more connections named Local Area Connection, Local Area Connection 2, etc. or a name you typed if you created a dial-up connection.
  4. Click on the first connection (not Make New Connection). On the left you will see Type: LAN Connection or Type: Dial-Up Connection and the name of the network adapter or modem for that connection.
  5. It will help to identify your wireless adapter by looking for the manufacturer's name and the name of the adapter. You can get this information from the documentation that came with your computer or from the box the wireless adapter came in.
  6. If the connection you clicked on does not contain the name of your wireless adapter, click the next connection.
  7. Once you have identified the connection for your network adapter, right-click on that connection.
  8. Click Properties
  9. Double-click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
  10. Click Obtain an IP address automatically
  11. Click Obtain DNS server address automatically
  12. Click Advanced

Configure TCP/IP For Windows XP

  1. Click Start>>Control Panel>>Network and Internet Connections>>Network Connections
  2. Under LAN or High Speed Internet, you will see one or more connections named Local Area Connection, Local Area Connection 2, etc.
  3. To the right of the icon for each connection is the name of the network adapter for that connection.
  4. It will help to identify your wireless adapter by looking for the manufacturer's name and the name of the adapter.  You can get this information from the documentation that came with your computer or from the box the wireless adapter came in.
  5. Once you have identified the connection for your wireless adapter, right-click on that connection.
