Air Space Policy

Information Resources (IR) has implemented wireless networking on campus. The intent of the wireless data network is to provide increased mobility and access to the campus information network in areas where traditional wired network access is not available. Wireless networking requires radio air space to serve as a transport for data communication. This policy will outline the procedures and expectations of faculty, staff and students with regard to the usage of radio air space on The University of Scranton (UofS) campus.

The UofS wireless network operates according to the IEEE 802.11b specifications and uses the FCC unlicensed 2.4 GHz ISM band of the radio spectrum. Communication devices and other types of equipment that operate in the 2.4 GHz band can potentially interfere with each other. Such interference can cause degradation and disruption of wireless service. In order to insure reliable access to the wireless network, air space must be free of devices that will cause interference.

Effective steps must be taken to engineer, install and manage wireless technology.  All attempts will be made to remove any devices that may cause interference in the wireless network coverage area. No individual or department should independently deploy any wireless networking equipment on the UofS campus without the cooperation of IR. IR will establish standards for equipment and procedures for access control. IR will maintain and support all equipment and systems required for the wireless data network.

Usage of the UofS wireless data network shall be in accordance with the policies and procedures described in the Code of Responsible Computing.
