These indexes vary in the information provided, from citations to the full-text articles, and in their focus, from general to discipline-specific. Use this list to identify the database that will best meet your information needs.  Most databases provide online help screens. Reference Librarians are available to help you in selecting the appropriate database and in using that database

ABI Inform Global indexes over 10,000 worldwide business periodicals for information on advertising, marketing, economics, human resources, finances, taxation and computers. Provides complete access to articles from more than 1,300 of the world's leading arts and humanities (including history, theology and philosophy) journals and to relevant articles in over 5,000 social science and science journals.  Contains records from 1980 to the present.

This database contains clinical trials of substances being tested for use against AIDS, HIV infection, and AIDS-related opportunistic diseases.   Each record covers a single trial, and provides information such as title and purpose of the trial, diseases studied, patient eligibility criteria, contact persons, agents being tested and trial locations. Updated biweekly.

America:  History & Life 
Publications are post-1964.  This indexes journal articles, book reviews, and dissertations on the history and culture of the U.S. and Canada from prehistoric times through the present.   The database comprises 400,000 bibliographic entries from over 2000 sources.  The database is updated annually.

Annual Reviews

AskERIC 
An Internet-based service providing information to teachers, librarians, counselors, administrators, parents, and others throughout the United States and the world. Through its Virtual Library you can access lesson plans, study guides, as well as full-text articles from ERIC Digest. The ERIC Digests are short reports on topics of current interest in education and include references to items providing more detailed information.

Leads users to the latest findings in every area of science, engineering, and technology. Covers trade and industrial publications, journals issued by professional and technical societies, and specialized subject periodicals.  Covers the time period from 1983 to the present.

ATLA Religion (FirstSearch)

Provides information on recent developments in virtually every life science discipline. Records include CAS registry numbers (beginning in 1998), the disease terminology used in MEDLINE, publisher information (including E-mail addresses and URL) and author URL and author E-mail addresses (since December 1997, when available and hot linked on FirstSearch Web). This database is updated monthly.

Book Review Digest  (FirstSearch)
Provides access to book reviews from nearly 100 American and Canadian periodicals. Some 7,000 adult and children's books are reviewed and added to the list every year. Concise critical evaluations are culled from 95 selected journals in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences, as well as library review media.  Only reviews that have appeared within 18 months of a book’s publication are included in this database.   Coverage is from 1983 until the present, and is updated monthly.

This is a chemical dictionary file for over 339,000 compounds of biomedical and regulatory interest. Records include CAS Registry Numbers and other identifying numbers, molecular formulae, generic names, trivial names, other synonyms, MeSH headings, and file locators which lead users to other files on the ELHILL® and TOXNET® systems. This database is updated quarterly.

CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) 
  This title is devoted to nursing and allied health journals since 1982; some biomedical and social science journals; some popular or consumer health journals; books; dissertations; serials & pamphlets of several organizations.   This database is an electronic equivalent to the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature.  The database is updated monthly.

Provides full text access to information compiled by the Cochrane Collaboration, an international network of individuals and institutions committed to reviewing the best evidence from clinical trials in medicine. Coverage is from 1991 to present. Updated quarterly.

The Columbia Granger’s World of Poetry 
This database contains 30,000 poems including the complete works of Wordsworth, Milton, and Melville.  Biographies about the poets, commentaries on particular poems and a glossary are also available in this source.  Poems are linked to related poems by subject and by the author that is being accessed.  Each commentary includes both an analysis by noted critics of poetry and a bibliography devoted to the poem being discussed.

Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO)
 Columbia International Affairs Online contains full-text information on international affairs from 1991 on, including working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded research projects and proceedings from conferences.  The section containing  working papers is augmented every month, as are those sections for conference proceedings, policy briefs and economic indicators.  Links and resources, the schedule of events and the response files are updated weekly.  New journal issues and books are added as they become available.

This subject index contains over 240 periodicals. The database provides information categorized from general (the home) to more specific (automobiles), by periodical (Consumer Reports), or by a specific brand name (CocaCola).   This index includes consumer protection information as well.  Covers 1986 to the present and is updated quarterly.

A directory of resources, providing information services.  DIRLINE focuses primarily on health and biomedical information resources including organizations, government agencies, information centers, professional societies, voluntary associations, support groups, academic and research institutions, and research facilities and resources. Records contain resource names, addresses, phone numbers, and descriptions of services, publications, and holdings.  This database is updated quarterly.

Disclosure – Global Access 
Provides corporate information on public companies that file with the Securities & Exchange Commission.  Full record of each company includes description as well as financial information such as balance sheets, annual funds flow, price / earnings data, and ration data.   Data includes a ten year financial history as well as the most recent  10-K and 10-Q reports.   Non-U.S. companies are included in the Worldscope database that part of this electronic source.  Disclosure is also available in FirstSearch.

Earthscape 
A website devoted to environmental issues.  This site is divided into four topics:  research, education,  Earth Affairs magazine, and links & resources.   ‘Research’ includes papers and conference proceedings,  a database, and journal abstracts.  ‘Education’ details classroom models, and sample syllabi as well as subject reference sources such as  Ask-a-Geologist.  ‘Earth Affairs’ is devoted to issues about how science can contribute to Earth’s future. ‘Links & resources’ is arranged by discipline, activities, habitats, and issues. This resource is full-text and is updated daily.

This database contains almost 4000 titles. Records from journals to which the Weinberg Memorial Library subscribe are full text (about 260+). In addition to providing the abstract, a Table of Contents is available for every journal indexed in EBSCO.   Subject coverage includes social sciences, businesses,  and medicine.  The database has coverage up to and including the current month.

This database collects gray literature, information about topics that is disseminated through non-traditional channels.   Science and public affairs reports a re collected in this database.  Department of Energy (DOE), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) are just a few of the agencies that have reports available from this resource.

Long regarded as the ideal single reference for periodical information in the diverse subject area of the humanities (including history, theology, and philosophy).   Articles and reviews of books, plays, radio and television from 465 sources  are displayed in a summary format (abstract) since 1984 to the present and is updated monthly.

Ingenta is a document delivery service and comprehensive index to over 23,000 scholarly scientific and technical journals. Several options allow you to set up an alerting service or deposit account for ordering articles sent to your desktop. The copyright and service fee is quite pricey, but the database is handy for verifying citations.

Institute of Physics Journals 
Provides access to 35 journals detailing all aspects of physics.  Articles are available in abstract form with some articles being available in full text format.   Covers the time period of 1980 to the present.

Provides full text access for scholarly journals in the areas of African-American studies, anthropology, Asian studies, ecology, economics, education, finance, history, literature, mathematics, philosophy, political science, and sociology.  This database covers a complete journal run from the first issue up to the most recent three to five years.

Provides access to journals, magazines, and newspapers in full text format.  The subject areas covered are news, business, law, medicine, and reference.  This database is updated daily, and sources can be searched for the last five or ten years, and in some cases back 30 plus years to provide bibliographic records. This database contains over 5200 sources.

This resource is the definitive index in the library and information science fields. Library Literature indexes some 360 periodicals and more than 600 monographs per year. Covers 1980 to the present and is updated monthly.

MathSciNet 
This resource collects reviews of topics devoted to mathematics since 1940.  There are about 1700 serials that are indexed for this resource.  Besides journals, conference proceedings and books are also reviewed. The database is updated daily.

MDX Health Digest  (FirstSearch)
Contains citations with abstracts of health articles, written in language suitable for the general public. Nearly 200 publications are covered, in five major categories: newsletters, magazines, and bulletins; newspapers; general interest magazines; medical journals; and medical school and hospital publications.  Covers 1988 to the present and is updated monthly.

MEDLINE/PubMed
PubMed, a retrieval service developed by the National Library of Medicine, provides access to MEDLINE, a database of more than 10 million bibliographic citations and abstracts in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, health care systems, and preclinical sciences. MEDLINE contains citations and author abstracts from over 4300 biomedical journals published in the United States and in 70 foreign countries. Coverage extends back to 1966 and new material is incorporated weekly. Journal articles are indexed for MEDLINE, and their citations are searchable, using NLM's controlled vocabulary, MeSH (Medical Subject Headings). MEDLINE is also available in FirstSearch and Lexis-Nexis.

PubMed also contains links to the full-text versions of articles at participating publishers' Web sites. In addition, PubMed provides access and links to the integrated molecular biology databases maintained by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). These databases contain DNA and protein sequences, genome mapping data, and 3-D protein structures

MEDSCAPE 
Access to Medscape is FREE, but requires a one-time membership registration. Medscape is organized by medical specialty, with each supported specialty having its own custom Web Site. Medscape's content comes from an assortment of sources including:  clinical eJournals, more than 50 medical journals and textbooks, professional medical news from Reuters, MedscapeWire, and medical news journal publishers, business and finance publishers, managed care and medical practice publishers, and more. This internet site is updated daily, and contains links to MEDLINE as well as other web-based medical sites.

Mental Measurements Yearbook 
Mental Measurements Yearbook, produced by the Buros Institute, contains full text information about and reviews of all English-language standardized tests covering educational skills, personality, vocational aptitude, psychology, and related areas.  This online version includes test reviews from the latest print version as well as the previous editions.
