This paper discusses the role of the amygdala in fear as indicated by anatomical connections to other brain structures and the elicitation of fear by electrical stimulation. The distinction between fear and anxiety is approached as well as a discussion of conditioned fear versus non-conditioned fear. Finally, a brief discussion of drugs, including anxiolytics (anxiety reducing agents), is pursued.
I particularly appreciated this article for
its clarity and content. Because it is a review article, it overviewed
very much of what was known about the role of the amygdala in fear, which
allowed me to catch up a bit on the field.
