The Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree is a post baccalaureate degree and may be awarded as an entry-level professional degree (the DPT) or as a post professional degree (the Transition Doctor of Physical Therapy or t-DPT).

The Doctor of Physical Therapy Program has been approved by The Board of Trustees at the University of Scranton. The Pennsylvania Department of Education has authorized The University of Scranton to confer the DPT degree. The DPT is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), American Physical Therapy Association, 1111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA 22314, 703-706-3240.

The DPT is offered to students who successfully complete a baccalaureate degree with a GPA of at least 3.0, and the DPT prerequisites with grades of at least C.

There is no undergraduate major in physical therapy at The University of Scranton. Applicants to the freshman class who wish to become physical therapists must earn a baccalaureate degree in another major before enrolling in the DPT Program. When applying to the freshman class, applicants may request evaluation for guaranteed assurance in the DPT program upon completion of a baccalaureate degree and the DPT prerequisites. (contact the Admissions Department)

Undergraduate students already enrolled at The University of Scranton can apply for admission to the DPT Program on a competitive basis. The DPT prerequisites and baccalaureate degree must be completed before enrollment in the DPT Program. Contact The College of Graduate and Continuing Education for more information.

Transfer students from other institutions are encouraged to apply to the DPT Program. The DPT prerequisites and a baccalaureate degree must be completed before enrollment in the DPT Program. Applications will be evaluated on a competitive basis. Contact The College of Graduate and Continuing Education for more information.

Admission to the DPT Program is limited to 45 qualified applicants each June. University of Scranton students who received guaranteed assurance when admitted to the freshman class, who completed the DPT prerequisites with grades of at least C, and who received a baccalaureate degree with a GPA of at least 3.0 will be guaranteed admission. Admission for other candidates will be competitive.

Undergraduate students at The University of Scranton who wish to enroll in the DPT program may select from a variety of undergraduate majors to successfully complete the DPT prerequisites and meet the minimum grading and GPA standards. Some majors such as Exercise Science and Biology are"good fits" in terms of meeting the DPT prerequisites. However, regardless of major, students, with the help of their academic advisors, must carefully plan the selection of general education core requirements and electives to meet the DPT prerequisites in a way that does not significantly add to their credit load. Majors that are not as good a fit are still acceptable as long as the student completes the requirements and meets the other criteria, but students choosing these majors should be prepared to take a number of extra credits not required by a specific major or the general education core requirements applicable for that major.
