University Housing

The University offers housing in small-to-medium size residences including traditional and more contemporary quad-style halls, houses, and apartments. All residences are located either on campus or near the campus perimeter within easy walking distance. A Jesuit Counselor lives in ten of the residence locations, and the Office of Residence Life staffs most buildings with a Resident Assistant (RA) who is trained to assist in the developmental growth of all students by providing an educational environment. Four full-time professional staff serve as Area Coordinators (AC). Area Coordinators supervise the RA staff. The ratio of staff to students is 1 to 22. Limited graduate housing is also available.

Freshmen are typically assigned to one of thirteen halls centered around terraced quadrangles. Freshmen residences are designed to encourage small-group interaction. Upperclass students may elect to live in the upperclass residences. These include three moderately sized residence halls (double occupancy rooms; traditional and "suite" buildings), 17 houses and apartment buildings, and 4 newly constructed townhouses.

Freshmen are informed of their room and roommate assignments in August. Returning students select their rooms and roommates in the Fall and Spring semester for the following academic year. Once a room is confirmed, and a housing contract is signed, students are obligated to remain in University housing for the entire academic year.

Entrances to University residences are equipped with either combination locks and keys, or card access, and individual student rooms are equipped with key or combination locks and door viewer. There are routine Public Safety and Residence Life patrols in and around University residences, and students can play a significant role in their own security by keeping doors and windows locked, maintaining the confidentiality of combinations, and taking care not to lose or misplace keys.

There is a $30.00 charge for the replacement of room keys so that the key and the lock core can be changed. Those found responsible for compromising security by propping doors open, posting combinations or providing combinations to others face strict University disciplinary action.

A resident who plans to invite a same gender guest for an overnight stay on campus must register the guest with his or her RA at least one day before the guest arrives. On arrival, the student host/hostess must greet the guest(s) at the main entrance and escort and assume responsibility for the guest(s) during their time in the building. A sole resident of a double occupancy room should be aware that the University reserves the right to assign the extra bed as deemed appropriate. During low occupancy periods, (vacations, intersession) the University may relocate students to a single residence to assist in maintaining a secure environment.

Student Conduct violations are addressed by the Office of the Executive Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs in cooperation and consultation with Residence Life staff.
