Dear Families, The purpose of this letter is to provide important information regarding on campus housing for the 2010-2011 academic year. As a residential campus, The University of Scranton offers housing for over 2,100 students in 28 residence halls and 13University owned houses. The Housing Lottery is an online process used by Residence Life to enable students to select housing for the next academic year. All full-time students in good academic standing are eligible to participate in the Housing Lottery. Please keep in mind that The University of Scranton guarantees on campus housing for four consecutive years. Consequently, if a student has never lived off campus, he or she retains that guarantee. If a student has moved off campus, he or she has lost the guarantee and can only be housed on a space available basis. This guarantee applies to all housing offered through the Housing Lottery or through Post Lottery Housing processes. Current sophomores, juniors, and seniors must pay a $200 non-refundable housing deposit by 4:00pm on December 11, 2009. This payment can be made b The Bursars Office, 800 Linden St. Scranton, PA18510. Please indicate that the payment is for the 20010-2011 Housing Deposit. This housing deposit will be applied to students' bills at the July 2010 billing if students select and confirm the housing contract. Paying the housing deposit after the deadline will significantly limit available housing options. Students should enter the "Personal Lottery Information Site" on the Residence Life Menu on The University Information System (UIS) after their deposit is sent and prior to the deposit deadline. This will verify that the deposit was received by the Bursars Office and the student is eligible for the Pool A Housing Lottery. If financial conditions exist inhibiting a student from being able to make this deposit, the student must contact Residence Life before the deadline stated above. Since all residential freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus, current freshman students in University housing are not required to pay a housing deposit. It is very important to note that during the on-line selection process students that select housing electronically agree to the terms of the housing contract. Students will be held to the terms of this contract. One key component to the contract is included below:"A RESIDENT agrees to reside in the residence halls for the entire academic year, or the remaining portion of the academic year. If student is enrolled in intersession classes, this contract also covers that period although additional fees apply. A RESIDENT may terminate this Agreement only if the RESIDENT has graduated, withdrawn from the UNIVERSITY, becomes a Resident Assistant, or has entered a study program away from the campus. Students who withdraw from the UNIVERSITY but are readmitted without missing one full fall or spring semester before being readmitted are not considered withdrawn for the purposes of the Agreement and will be held to any obligations made herein." In preparation for the lottery each student will be assigned a Lottery Identification Number (LIN) and receive a randomly assigned housing lottery time that can be accessed through their individual UIS account. During the online selection process in the Spring semester, students will be able to enter the lottery through UIS and select their room based on availability and eligibility. Eligibility for certain housing can be based on gender, social class, and the ability to fill all the beds within a selection. All apartments are assigned a specific gender, as are the adjoining double rooms in Condron, Gavigan, and Redington Halls (quad style housing). In all University owned houses, each room is gender specific and bathrooms assigned specific genders as well, whenever possible. All upper-class housing is co-ed, meaning men and women live in the same buildings, often times on the same floor and next door to one another. LThe University ofScranton does not offer coed apartments, rooms, or quad style housing. Flyers will be passed out to all students with detailed rules and instructions for the on-line housing lottery and information will be made available on the Residence Life website at www.scranton.edu/reslife.
