Employment Outcomes

Approximately 18% of our yearly graduates in criminal justice will pursue professional and/or graduate education in law, social work, criminology, accounting, school counseling, forensic science, etc. Of the remaining number of criminal justice majors (82.0%) who graduate every year and do not go on for further education, about 90.0% of this number will have found employment within the first 5 months after graduation in some type of entry level job. The starting salaries for these students are between $24,000 and $29,500.00 (class of 1998).
 

Departmental Computer Lab and Library

The location of this lab is in O'Hara Hall, Room 426. This lab consists of 10 - Pentium PC computers. There is an HP LaserJet III Printer. Software includes Windows 95, MS Office 2000 (which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access), Adobe Acrobat, McAfee Anti-Virus, SPSS, PowerTerm32, Netscape Communicator and Internet Explorer.

The Departmental Library (O'Hara Hall, Room 420) has a collection of various Sociology/Criminal Justice/Gerontology periodicals available for research purposes. The library is also open for a study room.
 

U of S Criminal Justice Graduate is the First Scranton Powell Scholar Award Recipient

Brendan Corbett (Class of '99) has been selected by the Rev. Joseph M. McShane, university president, as this year's General Colin Powell Scholars Program winner. The award recognizes "leadership and service" of the best Jesuit Cadets. Brendan received a $1,000 cash award upon graduation and tuition credit for the first year of graduate schooling at The University of Scranton. Cadet Corbett will go on active duty with the US Army this summer. He will go to Ft. Knox, Kentucky to the Armored Basic Officer Course, serve three years in a Tank Battalion, and then make a transition to the Military Intelligence Branch.
 

U of S Criminal Justice Major Recipient of Irish Study Scholarship

Erin Graves, Junior Criminal Justice Major, from Newton, New Jersey was the recipient of an Irish Study Scholarship sponsored by the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Lackawanna County.

The scholarship is the 1998-1999 Dr. John A. Corcoran Scholarship, a merit-based award for a student studying in Ireland at University of Galway. Erin is a dean's list student and active in the University's Student Host Club.
 

Study Abroad among departmental majors

Over the past few years, we have had departmental majors participate in the Junior year Study Abroad to such countries as England, Wales, Scotland, Australia and Spain.

Recently, two departmental majors participated in Study Abroad: Australia (Michael Grandchamp - CJ Major) and Wales (Alyson Cook - GERO Major).
 

Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities

Every year 10% of our students are accepted into Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.
 

U of S Criminal Justice Graduate is Voted Best Cadet in the Region

1LT Stacy E. Cawley (Class of '96) now serving in Germany in the Air Defense Artillery Brigade of the U.S. Army, was the "Best Cadet" in the Second ROTC Brigade in 1997. Stacy had the highest leadership scores, physical fitness results, and the technical competence assessments of all cadets in the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Metropolitan area of New York. She also won the Physical Fitness Award for achieving the highest score in her regiment on the PT test during training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina last summer.
 

Distinguished Internship Experiences

Summer Honor's Internship Program - Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
Baltimore, MD (1995)

Al "Chip" Cooke (Class of '96) was selected to participate in a summer honor's internship program with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Baltimore, Maryland.
 

White House Summer Internship (1994)

Jeffrey C. Morton (Class of '96) was selected to participate in a summer internship at the White House in Washington, D.C.
 

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Summer Honor's Internship (1991)

Every year the FBI in Washington, D.C. selects/invites 40 criminal justice majors throughout the country to come to the national office of the FBI for a summer honor's internship experience. Well over 500 criminal justice majors throughout the country with a QPI of 3.3 or better are invited to apply for these 40 summer internships. Maureen Kelly (Gourley) (Class of '92) was selected/invited to be one of the forty participants in the 1991 summer internship program.
