Microsoft PowerPoint 2003

AutoFit Text to Slides

This new option automatically fits title and body text to the size of the placeholder when activated. In older versions of PowerPoint, the user was required to press the Enter key to start a new line or expand the placeholder.

How to:
  1. Insert a new slide (Ctrl+M or Insert New Slide).
  2. Choose the slide layout Title and 2-Column Text, which is located in the second row, second column under Text Layouts. Type a long sentence for the title and the sentence will wrap the text on a new line.
  3. Type another sentence in the left placeholder and watch the line shift automatically to the next line.

Automated Layout

Another new option allows the slide's layout to adjust automatically as text, pictures, or an object is inserted.

How to:
  1. Insert a new slide (Ctrl+M or Insert New Slide). Change the slide layout to Contents (second column, 1st row, under the label Contents).
  2. Click on the menus Insert > Picture > Clip Art then insert a clip art image of your choice. Change the slide layout to Title to Content. Notice that the clip art automatically adjusts to the new layout.

Adding a Chart or Diagram

A new collection of organizational diagrams has been included in this addition. The new diagrams are easy to use templates that allow customization for adding shapes, changing styles, formatting, and scaling.

How to:
  1. Insert a new slide (Ctrl+M or Insert New Slide). Choose the layout Title and Diagram or Organizational Chart (2nd row, under the label Other Styles).
  2. Double click on the slide's chart icon to open the Diagram Gallery. Choose the Pyramid diagram, add some labels, and then click on the button OK.
  3. On the Diagram Toolbar click on the Insert Shape button and add another shape.
  4. If the new shape is not active then make it active.
Next, click on the Reverse Diagram arrow to change the shape's position in the Pyramid.
  5. Click on the AutoFormat button to change the diagram's style. Select from one of the formats and then click on the OK button.
  6. Click on the Change button and choose Cycle for the new diagram style.

Creating an Organizational Chart

The newest version of PowerPoint allows the user to work in the existing slide utilizing a floating Organizational Chart Toolbar and AutoFormat capabilities.

How to:
  1. Insert a new slide (Ctrl+M or Insert New Slide). Choose the layout Title and Diagram or Organizational Chart, which is located under the label Other Layouts.
  2. Double click on the slide's chart icon to open the Diagram Gallery. Choose Organizational Chart from the diagram menu.
  3. To add a subordinate, coworker, or assistant, click on the related organizational box (Root Manager) in the chart. Next, click on the Insert Shape button to add another shape.
  4. To change the chart's layout click on the Root Manager and then the preferred style. I used the layout Right Hanging for my example.
  5. To select a different level in the Organizational Chart first select a shape and then click on the Select button. Clicking on one of the options listed will select all shapes in that class.
Note: Options that are grayed out are not available.
  6. To change a chart's scheme or design click on the AutoFormat icon located on the Organizational Chart Toolbar. Next, choose the appropriate style from the Organizational Chart Style Gallery.

Note: To make additional changes to borders, colors, or text right-click on the object (box, connecting lines) so that the sizing handles appear. Remove the checkmark from Use AutoFormat. Repeating the step above but this time click on Format AutoShape.
