How to Use Task Panes

Task Panes are navigational aids that provide several options such as:

Creating a new presentation:

How to:
  1. Left click the down triangle to the Task Pane and then New Presentation.
  2. File > New.
  3. Click on the New Presentation icon located on the Formatting Toolbar.
Copying and pasting multiple items from the Clipboard

How to:

  1. Open Word and type at least one word. Next, insert a picture or clip art into the Word document and then copy each item separately. Close the document without saving it.
  2. Open PowerPoint with a new slide. Left click the down triangle on the Task Pane and then the menu Clipboard. Click on the menu Paste All to paste both objects into the slide.
Note: Remember that the Clipboard can hold up to 24 different items and that you have the option of pasting one or all items.

Search Results

How to:
  1. Left click the down triangle on the Task Pane and then the menu Search Results. Choose the location to search and then enter a search word or phrase.

Basic Search

How to:
  1. Click on the File > File Search..., and then enter the search text and any other search options needed to produce the desired results.
Insert Clip Art

How to:
  1. Left click the down triangle on the Task Pane and then the menu Clip Art. Place your cursor in the Search for: box and then type in a search word. Use the drop-down arrows in the related boxes (Search in: & Results should be) to tell PowerPoint where to look and what file type you require. Click on the Go button to begin searching.
  2. Insert > Picture > Clip Art, (Insert > Picture > From File), (Insert > Picture > Scanner or Camera)
  3. Click on the Clip Art icon located on the Drawing Toolbar.
Research

A search tool used to locate information from a variety of resources utilizing the Internet.


Slide Layout

Utilizing the slide layout option, you can change or reapply a slide layout to the active slide.

How to:
  1. Left click the down triangle on the Task Pane and then the menu Slide Layout. Choose from the templates provided to apply or reapply the slide layout. The selected template will appear on the slide but it is not applied until you click on the Apply button.
  2. Move the pointer to the outside of the slide's placeholder and then right click the mouse. From the context sensitive menu select Slide Layout and then choose from one of the templates provided.
  3. Click on the menu Format > Slide Layout.

Select and Apply a Slide Design

How to:

  1. Left click the down triangle on the Task Pane and then the menu Slide Design. Choose from the templates provided to apply or reapply the slide layout. The selected template will appear on the slide but it is not applied until you click on the Apply button.
  2. Place the mouse pointer on the outside of the slide’s placeholder and then click the right mouse button. From the context menu, select Slide Design and then choose one of the design templates provided.
  3. Click on the menu Format > Slide Design

Exercise:

  1. Change the slide's layout to Title Slide (under Text Layouts).
  2. Next, apply the template Fading Grid, first column and fifth slide under the label "Available for Use."
  3. In the title placeholder, type "Welcome to the University of Scranton."
  4. Type "Real World Ready" in the subtitle placeholder and then Save the presentation.

Apply or change a Slide Design - Color Scheme

How to:
  1. Left click the down triangle on the Task Pane and then the menus Slide Designs > Color Schemes. Select a new scheme. Color schemes represent the colors used for backgrounds, text, lines, fills, etc.
Apply a pre-designed Animation Scheme

How to:
  1. Click on the menu Slide Design > Animation Schemes from the Task Pane. Select all the text in the Title Placeholder and then click on the animation scheme Brush on Underline.
  2. Another method is to click on the menus Slide Show > Animation Scheme. Next, select the text, apply the scheme, and then Save the presentation.
Apply or create a Custom Animation Scheme

How to:
  1. Left click on the down triangle in the Task Pane and select Custom Animation.
  2. Select a placeholder with content (text, graph, and picture) and then click on the Add Effect button. Select an effect from the menu. Next, set the Start, Property and Speed preferences by left clicking the down triangle located on the Effect's Start menu.
Note: Each element including AutoShapes and shapes created from the Drawing Toolbar may contain more than one effect.


Exercise:
  1. Change the Task Pane to Custom Animation. Set the animations to start after the previous slide, change the Start to After_Previous and the Speed to Very_Fast. Click on Save.
  2. Reselect the text (Welcome to the University of Scranton) in the Title placeholder and then click on the menus Add_Effect > Emphasis > Complimentary Color 2 (Found under the label Subtitle, 1st column).
  3. Change the Start to After Previous and the Speed to Very Fast. Click on the button Save.
  4. Click on the the button Play to see the effects displayed in the work window.
  5. Select the the text Real World Ready in the subtitle placeholder. Click on the menus Add_Effect > Entrance > Diamond.
  6. Under the label Modify Diamond, change the options to Start to After Previous, direction to Out, and and the Speed to Medium. Click on the button Save.
  7. Reselect the text in the subtitle placeholder. Click on the menus Add_Effect > Emphasis > Spin. Change the Start to After Previous, the Amount to 360 degrees Clockwise, and the Speed to Medium.
  8. The last effect requires selecting the text used in the prior step. Click on the menus Add_Effect > Emphasis > More Effects. Under the label Moderate, choose Grow_with_Color.
  9. Change the Start to After Previous and the Speed to Medium.
  10. Save the Presentation and then click on the button Play.
Apply a Slide Transition

How to:
  1. Change the Task Pane to Slide Transition and then choose a transition. Next, modify the properties for speed, sound, and how it is advanced (mouse click or timed).
  2. Place the mouse pointer on the outside of the side's placeholder and then right-click the mouse. From the context menu select Slide Transition, choose a transition, and then modify the transition's properties. Another method is to click on Slide Show > Slide Transition.
