Microsoft Publisher 2003
Working with Frames
- Frames are created by using either the Text Tool or Picture Frame buttons. They are used to create a holding area for text or an object.
- When moving a picture or object the pointer changes to a Moving Truck (default icon). Hold the left mouse button down and drag the frame to the new location and then release the mouse button.
Hint: If a copy of a frame or picture is needed on several pages, Publisher allows you to copy and repeat that element on other pages. First, click on the frame and then the menu Edit | Copy, navigate to the page where the element is to be repeated and then use the menu Edit | Paste.
- To resize an object place the pointer on either the upper or lower corner rectangles surrounding the object. When the cursor changes to a two-headed arrow hold the left mouse button down and drag one of the corner handles diagonally to resize the object.
Hint: If an exact measurement or position is required, select the frame and then choose the menu Format. Select the Size and Position button to open the dialog box. Use the arrows provided to enter the new dimensions or double click in the box and type in the measurements.
Inserting Text
If your are designing your publication from a template, notice that Publisher has example text in each frame's placeholder. Publisher also estimates the number of words that will fit within the placeholder.
- To enter text in a placeholder place the cursor in the text box and start typing.
- Alternatively, you can also import a text file and insert it into your publication. Under the menu Insert, select Text File to open the Insert Text dialog box. Navigate to the file's location, select the file, and then click on OK. The text file is now inserted.
Hint: Text Selection- Double clicking on word selects the word.
- Click and Drag selects a block of text, or you can click at the beginning of the text, hold the Shift key, and then click the end of the text block.
- Triple clicking in the text frame selects all the text.
Changing Font Attributes: Colors, Styles, and Alignment
The Formatting Toolbar provides the same options as the one used in Microsoft Word. These include the B bold button, Italics button, and U for underlining. Included on the toolbar is the Font button, which allows you to change font colors.

- Highlight a line of text and then click on the Font button to change the default color. Clicking on the Font button without a selection will change all future text to the selected color.
- For more font colors, click on the drop-down arrow and choose more More Colors. Clicking on this button will allow you to choose from basic colors or create new ones. You can also increase or decrease the luminance by moving the slider up or down in the luminance box.
- Other attributes for effects need to be accessed from the menu Format | Fonts. This opens the Font dialog box, which displays a preview in the Sample window.
- To align text use the Left, Center, Right, or Justify buttons located on the same toolbar.
Adding Text Mastheads
Text mastheads are pre-designed elements used to dress up your publication. You can change the text and alter the design.
- Click on the Design Gallery button to open the gallery.
- Select and element then choose Insert Object from the dialog box.
Wrapping Text Around Graphics
- When you position a graphic on a text frame Publisher automatically wraps the text around the picture so that the two frames do not overlap.
- Some pictures will entirely fill the position while others have remaining white space left. This is because some graphics do not entirely fill the frame. Alternatively, you should choose wrap the text to the picture instead of the frame.
- Click on the button Picture Frame Properties located on the Format Toolbar and select Wrap text to Picture only.
Using Text Frames
- Text frames are edited similar to picture frames. You can edit text by placing the cursor inside the frame and then highlighting the text to bold, italicize, or add new bullets.
-
To link text to another frame click on the text frame that you want to link. Next, click on the Create Text Box Link located on the Standard Toolbar. This will change the mouse pointer to a pitcher.

- Click anywhere on an empty text frame to pour the text into another frame.
- You can link any number of text frames this way.

Disconnecting Text Frames
- To disconnect a text frame select the first frame to be disconnected.
-
Next, click on the icon Break Forward link located on the Standard Toolbar.
- To jump to the Next or Previous frame click on the icon Go to Previous or Next Frame.
