Thunderbird - Message Filters

Flash Video

Do you spend a lot time organizing your Inbox? Consider creating a message filter that you can use to automatically or manually sort existing and incoming email by criteria that you define. Filters can automatically delete “Quarantined spam messages” and manually move read mail from specific senders to corresponding folders.

Click on the video icon for a demonstration.

Filter I - Deleting Quarantined Spam Messages

  1. Click on the menus Tools | Message Filters to open the Filter window.
  2. Click on Next and then type a meaningful name for the filter “My Spam.”
  3. Now begin defining the criteria. Under the label “For Incoming messages that:” I selected “Match all of the following.”
  4. From the drop-down boxes below, I selected “Subject,” “begins with,” and typed “Quarantined spam messages” as the subject line without the quotes.
  5. Under the label “Perform these actions:” I selected “Delete Message.” Click on the OK button to save the rule. In the Message Filter window place a checkmark in the box “Enable” for the rule to run automatically. Close the window.

Filter two – Moving Read Mail

  1. Repeat step (a) used in the prior example.
  2. Name the filter; I used my supervisor’s first name.
  3. Repeat step (c) used in the prior example.
  4. From the following drop-down boxes I selected “From,” “is,” and then typed the complete email address of the sender.
  5. Under the label “Perform these actions:” I selected “Move Message to”; its matching folder on RoyalMail. Save the rule but do not place a checkmark in the Enable box, this rule runs manually. Close the window.
  6. Click on the menus Tools | Run Filters on Folder to run all filters manually.
