For most users the predefined numbering formats in Word are sufficient. However, there are times when a little customization is needed, for example, for an underscore in front of a numbered question. Or a list displaying the number in parenthesis or brackets.
How to Add the Underscore:
- On the Home tab, click the down arrow next to the "Numbering button".
- Choose from the option "Define New Number Format" to open the dialog box.
- Click in front of the number in the "Number Format box".
- Type three underscores , and then press the spacebar.
- Change the "Alignment to Center" and then click "OK".
How to Display the Number in Parenthesis or Brackets:
- On the Home tab, click the down arrow next to the "Numbering button".
- Choose from the option "Define New Number Format" to open the dialog box.
- Click in front of the number in the "Number Format box".
- Type a right facing parenthesis behind the number, and then a left facing parenthesis behind the number.
- Delete the period and leave the "Alignment" as Left.
- Click OK.
To remove a custom format right-click the format in the "Numbering Library" and choose "Remove".
