Understanding the Toolbars

The screen elements in SharePoint Designer are similar to other Microsoft programs. These include the Taskbar at the bottom of the screen, and the Title and Menu bar at the top. A new toolbar called the Common Toolbar displays as the default toolbar combining the most popular commands from the Standard and Formatting toolbars. These commands help create, edit, and format your webpage pages.

Above the Taskbar are the tabs Design view, Split view, and Code view

In Design view, the HTML editor records your actions (typing, inserting a table, etc.) and writes the source code (WYSIWYG html editor) for you. Selecting the tab Split, divides the window into two views allowing you to see the code being written as you edit in Design view. The tab Code view, displays the raw code allowing you to hand code or edit existing code.
