Library's Green Team's First Year in Review (Fall 2011)

Library Holds Retreat (Fall 2011)
The faculty librarians and administrators attended a retreat on May 31 in the DeNaples Center to discuss, evaluate and rewrite the library's tactical plan. The librarians created a vision statement for the library, as well as a revamped mission statement. They also worked on highlighting new goals and objectives for the coming years. > Full story

A Lighthouse in the Bronx Closes its Doors (Fall 2011)
In a surprise announcement on June 2, 2011, EBSCO Publishing sent out a message to its customers stating that it had acquired H.W. Wilson's databases and print publications. The H.W. Wilson Company, based in the Bronx, N.Y., since 1917, was founded in Minnesota by Halsey W. Wilson. Wilson's first venture was the ""Cumulative Book Index," which sold for $1 when first published in 1898. Wilson placed a 30-foot tall lighthouse resting on a book on top of his Bronx office building as a symbol of his company's mission: "To give guidance to those seeking their way through the maze of books and periodicals, without which they would be lost." Weinberg Memorial Library Awards Inaugural Library Research Prize

Rosemary Shaver, a junior in the honors program with a double major in history and political science, was selected as the winner of the first annual Library Research Prize. The Weinberg Memorial Library at The University of Scranton inaugurated the prize to recognize excellence in research projects that show evidence of significant knowledge of the methods of research and the information gathering process, and use of library resources, tools and services. > Full story

Library Develops Assessment Plan for Information Literacy (Fall 2010)
The Weinberg Memorial Library has developed an assessment plan in order to measure the quality and the effectiveness of its Information Literacy Program and the contributions that this program makes to enhance student learning. New Cataloging/Metadata Librarian
Sheli McHugh joined the staff of the Weinberg Memorial Library as the cataloging/metadata librarian, as of June 1. As head of this department, Sheli is responsible not only for taking on the traditional role as head cataloger, recently left vacant due to the retirement of Donna Ramos, but she will also be exploring ways to integrate appropriate emerging technologies into current cataloging practices. > Full story

New Media Resources Coordinator
Sharon Walsh Finnerty is the new coordinator of the Media Resources Center for the Weinberg Library, having assumed this position as of May 2010. Finnerty began her affiliation with the library when she was hired as evening/weekend circulation clerk in 2003. She moved to the cataloging department, where she served as cataloging clerk, a position she held until May, when she succeeded Karen Heckman, who recently retired from the University. > Full story
Google Books Revolutionizes Research (Spring 2010)

Enhancing Student Research Skills Through an Information Literacy Stipend (Spring 2010)
In Fall 2009, it was my good fortune to be invited to work on an Information Literacy Stipend with Dr. Sharon Meagher, Chair of the new Latin American Studies and Women's Studies (LA/W/S) Department. The Weinberg Memorial Library has been awarding Information Literacy Stipends to full-time faculty since 2004. The purpose of these stipends is to strengthen students' research skills by incorporating an information literacy component into the professor's course assignments. > Full Story
Information Literacy Stipends for 2009-2010 Announced (Spring 2010)
Dean Charles Kratz announced that a record number of Information Literacy Stipends have been granted by the Weinberg Memorial Library. William Bernhardt to Receive Distinguished Author Award (Fall 2009)
William Bernhardt
The talents and skills of the 2009 Recipient of the Royden B. Davis Distinguished Author Award, William Bernhardt, reflect many aspects of the contemporary library. William Bernhardt is an author, a teacher, a mentor, a researcher, a composer, and communicator. As an author, Mr. Bernhardt had sold more than 10 million books in various countries. Library Journal has called him the "master of the courtroom drama." The Vancouver Sun dubbed him "the American equivalent of P.G. Wodehouse and John Mortimer." > Full story

The University of Scranton Digital Yearbook Collection (Spring 2009)
The Weinberg Memorial Library's digital collections now include the University of Scranton yearbooks, from the 1916 St. Thomas College Aquinas to the 2007 Windhover. The 74-volume collection, containing almost 20,000 pages, was digitized by OCLC Preservation Services in Bethlehem, PA, and published to the web using CONTENTdm software. > Full story

Is The Library Really Deserted? (Spring 2002)
The November 16, 2001 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education featured a cover story entitled "The Deserted Library." Scott Carlson, a staff reporter for the journal, gathered statistical data, conducted interviews, and provided much anecdota information to support his premise that fewer students are visiting the library buildings on their campuses for information retrieval, studying, or socializing. Instead, he argues, they are accessing much of their informational needs from desktop computers in their dorm rooms and homes, or from laptop computers from virtually anywhere on campus or off. > Full story

From The Library of The Central American University in San Salvador (Fall 1999)
This past summer Reference Librarian, Joe Fennewald. accompanied other faculty and staff from the University of Scranton and Scranton Preparatory School to El Salvador. In preparation of their trip, Mr. Fennewald contacted Dr. Katherine Miller, Directora de Biblioteca Universidad Centroamericana. She expressed the need for books, compact disks and records, art slides, and a computer scanner. Alexander Pope First Editions Donated To Library (Fall 1995)
Brian J. Murray and his wife Diane have donated a collection of first editions by Alexander Pope to the Weinberg Memorial Library in Memory Louis D, Mitchell, Ph.D. Mr. Murray, a University trustee, earned a bachelor's in English in 1967; Dr. Mitchell has a member of the University English faculty for 28 rears until his death in 1989. > Full story
Children's Literature Collection And Endowment Established By Teacher's Family (Spring 1995)

Bibliographic Instruction Workshop
Cultural diversity and bibliographic instruction (BI) were united in the form of a 2 1/2 hour workshop led by Jane Wang, Library faculty, on Oct. 15, 1993. Fifteen Chinese-speaking graduate students from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan participated in a lecture/demonstration of library print and non-print resources, procedures and policies. > Full story
Core Collection Development Project Update (Spring 1994)
Ordering and receiving of titles for the Core Undergraduate Book Collection Development: Project are proceeding on target. To date about 1,700 books have been received. As processing is completed, titles are placed on display in the New Book Shelves in the Current Periodical Area.  > Full story

Library Acquires New Online System (Fall 1993)
Right on schedule, the Weinberg Memorial Library went online with the Data Research Associate's library automation system on Aug. 12. Core Book Collection Project Progresses (Fall 1993)
Over the summer ordering began on books selected for acquisition in the Library's core undergraduate collection development project.
