Email questions are generally answered within 24 hours.  The Chat Virtual Reference Service is available 24/7. Instant messaging with a University of Scranton Librarian is available Sunday through Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

BORROWING PRIVILEGES

All currently enrolled University of Scranton students, faculty, administration, staff, alumni, Scranton Preparatory students, and Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library have borrowing privileges. University students, faculty, staff, and administration are issued picture Royal Cards.  Royal Cards are swiped or scanned to charge out books, reserve items, and to use media materials. Lost Royal Cards must be replaced at the Royal Card office but should be reported to the Library to prevent unauthorized use.

Other categories of borrowers must register at the Circulation Desk to obtain a Library card. The first time a user borrows materials, the barcoded ID is activated at the Circulation Desk. Report lost cards immediately, as you would with a credit card, to prevent charges from being made against the account.

Reference books, current and bound periodicals do not circulate. “In-Library use only” materials must be returned to the Circulation Desk before the Library closes. Most media materials do not circulate and must be used in the viewing/listening area. Music CDs, if not on Reserve, may be charged out for 3 days. Students may make special arrangements to use media in classroom presentations.

Reciprocal Borrowing:

Other Colleges and Universities: University of Scranton has reciprocal borrowing agreements with the following college and university libraries in Northeastern Pennsylvania: East Stroudsburg University, Keystone College, King’s College, Luzerne County Community College, Marywood University, Misericordia University and Wilkes University. To register for borrowing privileges at these libraries, The University of Scranton community member must show a Royal Card as proof of current enrollment or employment. It is advisable to carry other forms of identification, such as a driver’s license, since policies are set by the individual institutions and may be subject to change. To register at the Weinberg Memorial Library, students and faculty at the above mentioned institutions must show two forms of identification: a current college registration or employment card and a photo ID.

Lackawanna County Library System: (Scranton Public Library): The University of Scranton also has a reciprocal borrowing arrangement with the Lackawanna County Library System (LCLS). University of Scranton students can obtain a LCLS card by filling out the form available at the Circulation Desks of either the Weinberg Memorial Library or the Scranton Public Library. To register at the Weinberg Memorial Library, LCLS borrowers must present an LCLS card and a photo ID. The borrower must be a resident of Lackawanna County and be in good standing at the Public Library, i.e., have no long overdue books or outstanding fines. LCLS borrowers must complete a form that describes borrowing rights and obligations. A card is issued to the LCLS patron when the Weinberg Memorial Library is able to verify the LCLS borrower’s eligibility. This may require a wait if the Scranton Public Library is not open at the time of registration. LCLS borrowers are limited to a total of five (5) books out in circulation.

Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library: To apply for membership in the Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library Group, complete the membership form available at the Circulation and/or Reference Desks or online form on the Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library page. In addition to unlimited borrowing privileges, Friends receive invitations to Library programs and events; preview book sales; and have the opportunity to volunteer to work on special projects in support of Library programs and services. Student members of the Friends are limited to five (5) books out in Circulation at any one time.

Borrower’s Responsibilities: All borrowers are responsible for the proper use and timely return of all library materials checked out on their cards. The Library charges for books that are damaged or lost. The average cost of books is $55.00 plus a $20.00 processing fee and a $5.00 billing fee.
