T/RS 121 Theology I Fall 1999 sections 6 and 31

COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of this course is to present key books and themes of the Judeo-Christian scriptures. As a result the student should acquire:

• an over-all familiarity with the biblical text, including a sense of its structure;
• a sense of the development of certain theological themes over time;
• skill in distinguishing the different types of writing and in reading biblical texts;
• the ability to evaluate various interpretations of a text and to articulate one's own interpretation orally and in writing.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

• careful reading of texts from The New Oxford Annotated Bible with the Apocryphal/Deuterocanonical Books (NOAB), supplemented by An Introduction to the Bible: A Journey into Three Worlds, 4th ed. and discussion of the readings in small groups
• one 2-3 minute oral protocol
• four quizzes;
• six papers of about two pages each;
• a final exam, during the week of Dec. 11
