TEXT:  The Extraordinary Chemistry of Ordinary Things, Fourth Edition, Carl H. Snyder, 2003.

This course is an introduction to chemistry. No previous college-level chemistry or mathematics background is required. You should have a calculator capable of doing basic arithmetic, including logarithms and exponentials. Please bring this calculator to all class meetings. All in-class assignments (exams, quizzes) must be done with non-programmable, non-communicating devices (pencil, pen, slide rule, abacus, nonprogrammable calculator). Use of a programmable or communicating calculator on an in-class assignment will result in a score of 0 on that assignment.

GRADING POLICY

A weekly quiz will be given during the first five minutes of the first class of each week (The first quiz will be given September 8). The quiz will consist of one or two short-answer or multiple choice questions based on the material covered in the preceding week’s lecture and/or homework assignments. Three in-class, full-period exams will be given on the dates listed below. The final exam will be a two-hour, comprehensive examination. The grading for this course will be based on examination performance (100 points for each semester exam, 200 points for the final exam). The quiz total (14 quizzes x 7 possible points each = 98 possible points) may be used to replace the lowest examination score. The score for the first missed exam will automatically be replaced with the quiz total. No make-up exams will be given for missed exams. Homework problems from the text will be assigned, but not collected. Attendance at all class meetings is expected. Six or more absences may result in a reduced grade for the course.
