Creating Your Web Page:
An Introduction to the Basics
We've created a Page
'O Links so you can find images, animated GIFs, and backgrounds for
your web page.
Students of the University of Scranton must make adjustments
to their Tiger account before proceeding.
The steps you must take from here sound a little more technical than
the previous but there is nothing to worry about. As I mentioned earlier,
this manual will take you through step-by-step. To view your webpage you
must start running Netscape. This is easily
accomplished by double-clicking, with the left button of the mouse, on
the icon(picture) for Netscape Communicator.
Once this is done, you must take the mouse and position the arrow so that
it is over the word File on the top menu bar.
When the drop-down menu appears, glide your mouse down to New
and then slide it over to Blank. You now have
an empty pallette waiting for your artistry.
To save the page you are working on, move the arrow over
the "save" button and left-click once. Now
you will see a window appear. This window
is to let you choose where in the computer you want to save your webpage.
First, locate the box at the top of the window and left-click the down
arrow that is inside the box, on the right side. After doing this you will
see a list of various items drop down, extending from the top box. Locate
the item that has a capitol letter c with a colon in parenthesis next to
its icon. [i.e. (C: )] You must move the arrow
over this item and again single left-click. At this point you should see
a list of folders appear in the larger window below. Locate the folder
entitled "Preweb"
and
now you must double left-click on that folder. If there is no folder named"Preweb"you
can use the folder "My
Documents". You should now see either
the word Preweb or the words My
Documents (depending on which you chose) in the top box of the window,
where (C: ) formerly was. If you do not, you
must repeat the process starting with clicking the down arrow in the right
side of the top box. (Sometimes either clicking too
slow or clicking too fast on the Preweb
folder will cause a problem. Adjust your click-speed accordingly.)
Now that you have the Preweb folder in
the top box of the window, you will now see a list of the "Files"
in that folder. To rename your webpage you must now position the arrow
in the lower box of the window. Left-click in the box that has the words
"File Name" on the left side. You can now
proceed to click the save button on the bottom of the save window.
At the top of the screen you will see numerous square blocks. These
blocks represent different tools that are there to help you. Starting with
the blocks in the upper left corner of the screen, we will go through them
horizontally, and then move to the next line.

This is just a brief overview of what some of these tools will do. For
the majority of these, you must first highlight the text or object. This
can be done by holding down the left button of the mouse and sweeping over
the
desired text/object. While doing this look at the bottom of the screen
for a more detailed explaination. To see how your page will look when it
is put on to the World Wide Web, click the
Preview
Box that was mentioned in the list
above. After you have made all of your modifications, you now must publish
your page. To do this you must click on the Publish
Box that was also mentioned above. There are several empty spaces
in this window that you must fill in. First of which is the Page
Title and HTML File Name. The
Page
Title can be
anything you choose, but the HTML File Namemust
be
Default.html
if this is your primary page. Next, you will see one long
white space where you must type:
ftp://tiger.uofs.edu/
Don't
forget the last slash ( / )
In the two smaller boxes below that, as instructed, enter your user
name and your password.
Do
Not place a check in the box that saysSave
Passwordor else others will be able to edit
your page.
After that there are two circles at the bottom of the window. This
is important especially if you have placed images in your webpage. Also
pertaining to images, make sure that you select all the ones that you want
on your page by highlighting them with a click of the mouse. Usually, this
is done for you. The images that you don't want, don't highlight.
When this is complete, click the OK button.
When you have completed this step you will be informed that your files
were uploaded and you should press the OKbutton.
You can now minimize or close the Netscape Composer.
You can view your page by opening Netscape
and entering your address. Most address at the University
of Scranton have the format:
http://academic.uofs.edu/student/username/
Again, if you are faculty or staff, replace student with the appropiate
term.
Congratulations
on your first webpage!!!
Suggestions
-
The more images you add to your page, the longer it will take to "load".
In other words, people will have to wait to see your page.
-
Remember to add a spot on your page inviting people to mail you. This is
easily done by typing "Send Me Mail", highlighting
it with the mouse, and clicking the "Link"
button. In the window that appears, type: mailto:username@uofs.edu
-
If you are FTP'ing multiple files, hold down the Control (Ctrl)
key and click on each one. When all the files that you want are highlighted,
click the copy button in the center.
-
Before you start your editing process, open the preweb
file and make sure there are no other files named "default.html"
in there. Many people lost their pages this way.
-
Go through the web and get some ideas. There is a lot of impressive stuff
out there.
-
Please remember to delete your file when you are done. With so many people
using these computers, a lot of old files can accumulate in one day.
