The Beginning

First, get into your TIGER account using Telnet software.  At school, you access this software by clicking start - Internet ToolsPowerTerm Telnet - Academic (this will automatically take you to tiger.scranton.edu, our server - in your software at home,  you would have to enter tiger.scranton.edu by hand).

Your TIGER username is the same as your email (My Scranton) username but your password is hard to predict.  The last time I checked, the University had 3 different possible "default" passwords!!!  This hurts my head, but it was true.

Your password could be your birthday in the following format: ddmmyy.  It could be the last 6 numbers of your Royal Id.  It could be the last 6 numbers of your Social Security Number.  Surprisingly, the latter is most likely.  Why is it a surprise?  It's a surprise because we went to the Royal ID system to help keep your Social Security Number secret.  Guess which 3 numbers of your SS Number are easiest to "guess" - if you guessed the 1st three, you are correct!!  They are linked to where you where born and when you were born, but I digress :)   If nothing seems to work, contact the Help Desk - they have plenty of experience with this sort of problem.  They should be able to "reset" your password to whatever it is they reset it to these days. If it's being "reset" to something new - it really isn't a "reset," but that's what they call it :)     By the time you read this, the default password may have changed yet again - we'll cope!

Your email (My Scranton)l and TIGER passwords are independent), by the way - just to keep you on your toes :)

Note - When you're working on the blue screen in the Telnet software, your mouse is of precious little use.   This software is written for the old days when cursor keys ruled.

Also, when you are typing in your username it will appear that nothing is happening on the screen.  That's the way the system works, you don't even get little dots when you type passwords.  Enjoy the suspense!

If you haven't been in this account for some time (or ever), it will insist that you immediately pick a new password - be prepared and know what password you will use BEFORE you get to this point.. You new password must be at least 6 characters in length, cannot be a dictionary word, and cannot be a password you have used in the past.  This password automatically expires every 180 days.  It appears that lots and lots of students will have to visit the Help Desk to get their passwords reset.  I'm sorry about this - if I were king, this wouldn't happen, but I'm not.  It's very important that you get your password straightened out before class, or the class will be trashed with folks running up and down stairs to the Help Desk.  Sorry, but I can't fix this reality.

If you're just testing out your TIGER password, you can stop now and we'll go over what follows in lab.  Just close the Telnet program and you'll be logged out automatically.

At the dollar sign prompt ($), you must type

webpage

and press "enter". After this, you should see a small introductory paragraph and a question asking you if you want to create only the directory. For the ease of instruction, you should type

yes

and press "enter". Then, there will be a short delay while the computer processes your request. This will not design a homepage for you, it only gives you a directory for your page. The computer tells you that the file must be named default, but that doesn't concern us right now.

Now you will execute a little program that will allow you to publish web pages.

At the ($) prompt type:

setup_login

Then type:

webftp

That's it!!  Now you can close the Telnet program.  Just hit the x in the corner of the window - it's scarry, but it works - no need to log out.
