Stroop Instructions

Sign up for a 30-minute time period on the bulletin board outside Dr. Cannon's office.  You and your partner should flip a coin, like in the Sniffy study, to determine your order numbers.  If you are #1, you will do the traditional paper Stroop test first and the computer Stroop task second.  If you are #2, you will do the computer Stroop task first and the traditional paper Stroop test second.  Write your names (pair by pair) on the ID # list outside of Dr. Cannon's office on the next available line.  That line will define your ID #.  You will need to write both your order number and ID number on your data sheet. (Print out this page and use the tables at the bottom for your data sheet.)

If you have order #2, you need to complete the computer Stroop task before you meet with your partner to do the traditional Stroop task. For instructions to the computer Stroop task, please refer to the link off the Research Methods homepage.

To complete the traditional Stroop test, make sure that all of the following are in the running room (Room 213):
a.  A packet (consisting of three typed pages, three transparencies, and one piece of cardboard)
b.  Water-soluble marker
c.  Stop watch
d.  Answer sheet (on the bottom of THIS page)
e.  Pencil
f.  Directions (contained on the print out of THIS page-which you should read once before testing)

Take the materials and go to Room 213 during your scheduled time.

Flip a coin to decide which student will be the tester and testee first.  Make sure you record this on your data sheet.  If you are the testee first, put a 1 next to the variable “Stroop Order”.  If you are second, place a 2.  The tester takes the stop watch (which is preset to go off after 45 seconds--for this to be true, there should be a "CS" in the upper left-hand corner), the answer sheet, and directions page.  The testee takes the cardboard sheet.

Complete the three pages of the Stroop packet in the order that they are arranged (1. color words in black writing, 2. X's in color writing, 3. color words in color writing).

The tester then reads the directions for the corresponding page.  Be sure to read the bold print word for word .

After the first subject has completed all three pages, the tester will count up the number of correct responses (by counting up to the circled item) for each page and record it next to the appropriate space on the data sheet.  The tester will then give that sheet with the information on it to the testee.  The testee can then record the scores for Sheets 1, 2, and 3 on his or her own data sheet.

Erase the marker on the transparencies and then switch.  The tester becomes the testee and the testee becomes the tester.  After the second person runs the experiment, you’re done.  Leave everything (except your data sheets) in the room.

If you are order #1, you must then complete the computer Stroop task on your own time.  Note: The computer and traditional Stroop tasks do not need to be completed in the same session, but each individual part must be done in one sitting.  Only the traditional Stroop task should be done in pairs.

Complete the remainder of the data sheet (there are three parts).

This is a test of how fast you can read the words on this page.  After I say begin, you are to read down columns starting with the first one (point to the leftmost column) until you complete it (run hand down the leftmost column) and then continue without stopping down the remaining columns in order (run your hand down the second column, then the third, fourth and fifth columns). If you finish all the columns before I say “Stop”, then return to the first column and begin again (point to the first column).  Remember, do not stop reading until I say “Stop” and read out loud as quickly as you can.  If you make a mistake, I will say “No” to you.  Correct your error and continue without stopping.  Are there any questions?  Instructions may be repeated or paraphrased as often as necessary so that the subject understands what is to be done.  Then continue.  Ready?….Then begin.   As the subject starts, begin a stopwatch.  After 45 seconds, say: Stop.  Circle the item you are on (with the marker).  If you finished the entire page and began again, put a one by your circle.  Turn the page.

This is a test of how fast you can name the colors on this page. Remember to name the colors out loud as quickly as you can.  Are there any questions? Ready?….Then begin.  As the subject starts, begin a stopwatch.  After 45 seconds, say: Stop.  Circle the item you are on (with the marker) If you finished the entire page and began again, put a one by your circle.  Turn the page.

I want you to name the color of the ink the words are printed in, ignoring the word that is printed in each item.  For example, (point to the first item of the first column), this is the first item: what would you say?  If the subject is correct, go on with the instructions.  If incorrect, say: “No, that is the word that is spelled there.  I want you to say the color of the ink the word is printed in.  Now (pointing to the same item) what would you say to this item?  That’s correct (point to second item), what would the response be to this item?  If correct, proceed; if incorrect, repeat above as many times as necessary until the subject understands or it becomes clear that it is impossible to go on.  Good. Then begin.  (Time for 45 seconds, then say: )  Stop.  Circle the item you are on.
