Some classes above are listed as "No Class". This is because on Oct 13, 23




and Nov 6, 13 this class will meet at 3:00 on a Friday afternoon together




with all other Biology and ESCI seminar sections to hear biographical




and academic presentations from members of the Biology faculty. These Friday
sessions will be treated like any other typical Monday afternoon class,
and you are required to be there. You must make appropriate arrangements 
for yourself to be able to attend these Friday afternoon sessions.

COURSE POLICIES

OBJECTIVES: This course is intended to facilitate the student's entry into the university community and the life of a college student. A major goal is that participating students' academic performance will be enhanced and that the probability of graduating from the university in a timely fashion will be increased. Toward that end, writing and speaking (class discussion) are emphasized.

This section is specifically designed for freshmen who have declared a major in Environmental Science or in Biology. It is expected that students are simultaneously enrolled in BIOL 141, General Biology.

ATTENDANCE: Students are expected to attend all classes. Up to two absences may be approved by the instructor given prior notice and adequate cause. Unexcused or additional absences will result in a decreased grade (see Grading Policy).

ACADEMIC HONESTY: Appropriate collaboration is encouraged, but plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated and will result in an automatic grade of zero for the assignment.  You must live up to the University Of Scranton Academic Code Of Honesty and fulfill all the requirements of academic integrity. GRADING POLICY: grades will be determined as follows:

1. 70% on the 7 assignments listed above (10% each). All written papers are to be no less than 1 page and no more than 2 pages long, double spaced, 12 pt type.  Papers are graded for both content and form; form includes grammar, spelling, diction, sentence structure, organization, and appearance. Late assignments will receive only half the grade they otherwise would have received

2. 30% on class discussion and participation. This portion of the grade is based on the quality of your questions and contributions to discussions, not the quantity.

3. Science is an ongoing process and scientists are always working to expand the body of knowledge.   To help introduce you to real science, during the semester there will be at least 4 research seminars given primarily by distinguished speakers from outside the university.  You can gain 5 bonus pts (the equivalent of half a grade) by attending at least two of these lectures.  Your attendance will be monitored by having you hand in a short summary of the presentation to me as you leave the room.

4. For each unexcused absence or for each excused absence beyond the 2 allowed, your course grade will drop by one full letter below that determined in parts 1, 2, and 3.  Being absent does not excuse or delay any of the assignment deadlines.
