FIELD/DAY TRIPS/EVENTS

Be sure to dress appropriately for the trips. Bring your own binoculars and scopes. Trips beginning in the morning usually run through lunch, so pack a bag lunch also. On longer trips carpooling will be coordinated on the day of the trip--have a full tank of gas if driving; please share gas and toll costs with the driver if riding.  For additional directions or more information, call the trip leader. APRIL 11, 2009

Adopt-a-Highway Project and Forest Acres Sanctuary clean-up.   Meet at McDade Park at 9:00am for the Snake Rd. litter pick-up and/or meet at the sanctuary at 10:30am for the clean-up  (Directions to sanctuaries).  Kevin Hilsey (378-2450) coordinator.


APRIL 23-26, 2009

Weekend-long trip to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, VA.  Let trip leader, Jim Montgomery (759-1322) know if you are interested in joining the trip so he can put you on the contact list.  He can also give you the names and numbers of lodging areas where rooms have been reserved.  You must make your own reservations by 4/5/09 at the latest.


MAY 2, 2009

Field trip to "The Narrows".  Meet at 8:00am along Hoppy Rd (road paralleling the east side of the Susquehanna River) just south of Falls Rd. intersection near Falls, PA.  Bill Speare (586-8343) leader.


MAY 5, 2009

Senior Stroll at the Lackawanna State Forest picnic area near Thornhurst, PA.  Exit I-81 at Exit 175B (Pittston/DuPont).  Turn on PA Rt 315 north, and turn right onto Bear Creek Rd. in about 1/2 mile.  The picnic area is ~14 miles down the road on the right.  Meet there at 10:30am.   Carol Lizell (883-7543) leader.


MAY 9, 2009

Lackawanna County Bird Census portion of the Pennsylvania Annual Migration Count.  This is a census of all species seen from midnight to midnight on the day.  The county is divided into 6 sectors with a count leader for each.  Contact Mike Carey (586-8312) if you are interested in helping out.  Let him know which part of the county you would like to work in, and he will hook you up with the sector leader there.


MAY 15-16, 2009 

From 5:00pm 5/15 to 5pm 5/16 is the count period for the LAS High Count.  See how many species you can see or hear within a 30 mile radius of the Lackawanna County Courthouse.  After you are finished counting, join us at 6:00pm at the Church of the Epiphany (along US Rts 6&11 in Glenburn, PA) for a potluck dinner and an overall count tally.  Bring your own eating hardware and a dish to share.  Call Derry or Nancy Bird (945-5226) for church directions or other information.


MAY 19, 2009

Senior Stroll at Tobyhanna State Park.  Meet at 10:30am at the beach parking lot in the park.  The park can be reached from I-380 exit #8 (Tobyhanna).  Turn right onto PA Rt 423 after ~1.2 miles.  Follow this route into the park in ~4 miles.  Carol Lizell (883-7543) leader.

Field trip to Goose Pond Scout Reservation.  Meet at 2:30pm at Shelley's Family Restaurant (formerly the Hamlin Diner), located on PA Rt 590, 1 mile east of Hamlin corner.  Len and Gerry Janus (254-9895) leaders.


MAY 30, 2009

Ricketts Glen State Park and State Gamelands 13 (Splashdam) field trip.  Meet at the large gamelands parking lot at 9:00am (sign will say "Welcome to State Gamelands") on PA Rt 487, 8 miles north of the junction with PA Rt 118 and 4.4 miles north of the main entrance to the state park.  Jim Montgomery (759-1322) leader.


JUNE 6, 2009

Camp Lackawanna and Endless Mountains Nature Center field trip.  Meet at the nature center at 10:00am.  To get there take US Rt 6 about 6 miles west of Tunkhannock and turn left at the light on Vosburg Rd.  Travel to the end of the road (~4 miles) to enter the camp.   Park at the brown nature center building.  Carol Lizell (883-7543) leader.


JUNE 9, 2009

Senior Stroll in South Abington Park, Chinchilla, PA.  Meet at 10:30am in the parking lot.  The park is located on US Rts 6&11 in Chinchilla, next to the South Abington School and just south of the ramps for I-81 and I-476.  Carol Lizell (883-7543) leader.

Springville area field trip.  Meet at 8:00am at Davan's Store on PA Rt 29, 6 miles north of Tunkhannock.  Mark Catalano (836-1481) leader.


JUNE 20, 2009

Beaver Creek (Glenn Czulada farm) field trip.  Meet at 8:00am at Glenn's house.  To get there, take PA Rt 307 south from Scranton (~8 miles) to PA Rt 502.  Turn right onto 502 and go 1 mile.  Then make a left onto Yostville Rd.  In about 300 yds, turn right at the new house with the brick drive.  Glenn Czulada (842-8804) leader.


JUNE 23, 2009

Senior Stroll at Mellow Park in Peckville.  Meet at the parks main entrance off Keystone Ave and River St. in Peckville at 10:30am.  Carl Lizell (883-7543) leader.

Lackawanna State Park and R. Smith banding station field trip.  Meet at the boat launch parking area in the state park at 7:00am.  The park is located on PA Rt 407 ~4 miles north of Waverly, PA.  Mike Carey (586-8312) and Rob Smith (434-2413) leaders.


JULY 12, 2009

Dragonfly and damselfly watch at Davis Crossing sanctuary.  Jerry Skinner will lead us through the sanctuary wetlands to see what we can.  Dress appropriately if you really want to get out in the wetlands.  Meet at the sanctuary (Directions to Sanctuaries) at 2:30pm.  Carol Lizell (883-7543) leader.



ANNUAL DINNER AND MEETING

The annual dinner and meeting will held on August 23, 2009 at 5:00pm.  So reserve the date.  Details will be in the next calendar update.  John and Linda LaCapra (346-8225) Co-chairs.




ANTHRACITE MUSEUM LECTURES/MEETINGS

Meet at the Anthracite Museum Auditorium at 2:30pm for meetings or lecture/slide presentations.  The museum is located in McDade Park, Scranton.  Refreshments and camaraderie are always available at these meetings too.  Contact Gene Gallagher (586-5156) for additional information on each date.
