FIELD/DAY TRIPS/EVENTS

Be sure to dress appropriately for the trips. Bring your own binoculars and scopes. Trips beginning in the morning usually run through lunch, so pack a bag lunch also. On longer trips carpooling will be coordinated on the day of the trip--have a full tank of gas if driving; please share gas and toll costs with the driver if riding.  For additional directions or more information, call the trip leader. Fifth Annual Elaine Thomas Wildflower Census.  Cover Lackawanna County from now through fall to identify all the species of wildflowers you can.  Contact Gerry and Len Janus (254-9895) or Carol Lizell (883-7543), coordinators, for more information.

Adopt-a-highway - Snake Rd. and Forest Acres Sanctuary Cleanup.  Meet at McDade Park, Taylor at 9:00am or at the sanctuary (directions at home page) around 10:30am.  Kevin Hilsey, coordinator (378-2450)

Early Earth Day at Boscov's in the Mall at Steamtown, Scranton  from 11:00am - 3:00pm.  We will be manning an information table there.  Call Mike Carey (586-8312) or Gene Gallagher (586-5156) if interested in helping out.


APRIL 19, 2008

Little Rocky Glen Preserve of the Countryside Conservancy field trip.  Meet at the Lackawanna Trail Elementary Center on College Avenue in Factoryville at 9:00am to carpool to the site.  Carol Lizell (883-7543), leader.

Davis Crossing Sanctuary cleanup.  Meet at the sanctuary (directions at home page) at 2:30pm.  Sue Zenke (563-1565), coordinator.

Wildflowers and Birds at the Narrows field trip.  Meet at 9:30am.  Gerry and Len Janus (254-9895) leaders.


APRIL 27, 2008

Susquehanna Riverlands field trip.  Meet at the Wetlands Nature Area at 1:30pm.  It is located off of US Rt. 11 about 4 miles south of Shickshinny.  Turn left at the sign for the "Wetlands Nature Area" into the parking lot.  Jim Montgomery (759-1322) leader.


APRIL 29, 2008

City of Scranton late "Earth Day" celebration from 5:00 - 7:00pm.  Located along Center St. near the Marquis Gallery.  We will have an information table manned there.  Call Mike Carey (586-8312) if interested in helping out.


MAY 3, 2008

Wildflower walk at the Messimer Creek Preserve of the Countryside Conservancy.  We will meet at the Lackawanna State Park office on SR 524 at 9:00am and carpool to the preserve.  Gerry and Len Janus (254-9895) leaders.


MAY 6, 2008

Senior Stroll - St. Pius X Seminary and at the Davis Crossing Sanctuary.  Meet at Our Lady of the Abingtons Church in Dalton at 10:00am.  Carol Lizell (883-7543) leader.


MAY 10, 2008

Pennsylvania Annual Migration Count.  From midnight - to midnight or any portion thereof, we will be taking a census of all birds seen in Lackawanna County.  The county has been divided into 5 sectors for the count, and all sector leaders would welcome any assistance.  Call Mike Carey (586-8312) if interested in helping, and he will hook you up with a sector leader.


MAY 16 - MAY 17, 2008

LAS Spring High Count period from 5:00pm on the 16th to 5:00pm on the 17th.  Try to spot as many species as you can in a 30 mile radius circle centered on the Lackawanna County Courthouse.  Then bring your count total to the potluck dinner, and we'll tally everything up.  The dinner will be at the Lake Winola Methodist Church starting at 6:00pm, May 17th.  Call Delores Trycinski (378-2378) for directions to the church.

Senior Stroll - Christy Mathewson Park, Factoryville, and Keystone College, LaPlume.  Meet at the Lackawanna Trail Elementary Center on College Ave. in Factoryville at 10:00am.  Carol Lizell (883-7543) leader.

Dark Regions Road field trip.  Hike along the road in Newton-Ransom Twps.  Call Derry Bird (945-5226) for meeting location and time.

Senior Stroll on the Luzerne County National Recreation Trail in Pittston.  Meet at the far left end of Cooper's Restaurant parking lot on Kennedy Blvd. in Pittston at 10:00am.  Carol Lizell (883-7543) leader.

Lackawanna State Park field trip.  Meet at the boat launch parking area in the park at 7:00am.  Mike Carey (586-8312) leader.


JUNE 14, 2008

Lackawanna State Forest/Thornhurst field trip.  Meet at the state forest picnic area at 9:00am.  To get there take the Pittston/Dupont exit (Exit 175B) off I-81 and turn on to SR 315 north.  After 1/2 mile turn right on to Bear Creek Rd and follow for ~14 miles to the picnic area.  Gene Gallagher (586-5156) leader.


JUNE 17, 2008

Senior Stroll along Bear Hollow Road between Harvey's Lake and Loyalville.  Meet at Pickett's Charge Restaurant in Dallas at 10:00am.  Carol Lizell (883-7543) leader.


JUNE 21, 2008

Bruce Lake Natural Area field trip.  Meet at the rest area on eastbound I-84 at 8:30am to caravan to the parking area.  If you want to join us for breakfast first, exit I-84 at the PA 191 exit and go north to the Twin Rocks Restaurant at 7:30am.  Jim Montgomery (759-1322) leader.


JUNE 28, 2008

Splashdam (SGL #13) and Rickett's Glen State Park field trip.  Meet at the Splashdam parking lot at 9:00am.  If coming west on PA 118 from Dallas, turn right onto PA 487 north toward the main entrance to Ricketts Glen.  The parking area is 4.4 miles north of the park entrance on the left.  If coming south on Rt 487 from Dushore, the parking lot is 6.0 miles south of Lopez on the right.  Jim Montgomery (759-1322) and Derry Bird (945-5226) leaders.

Nescopeck State Park field trip.  Meet at the parking area in the park at 9:00am.  Take I-81 south to the Mountaintop exit (Exit 165) and turn onto SR 309 south.  In 4 miles turn left onto SR 437.  In 6.4 miles turn right onto Honey Hole Road.  The park entrance is on the left in 2.5 miles.  Carol Lizell (883-7543) leader.

ANTHRACITE MUSEUM LECTURES/MEETINGS

Meet at the Anthracite Museum Auditorium at 2:30pm for meetings or lecture/slide presentations.  The museum is located in McDade Park, Scranton.  Refreshments and camaraderie are always available at these meetings too.  Contact Gene Gallagher (586-5156) for additional information on each date.
