PASSIVE INTERVERTEBRAL MOTION TESTING
LUMBAR FORWARD BENDING

 Lumbar Forward Bending PIVMT Picture

Purpose
  • To evaluate forward bending mobility between individual lumbar vertebrae
Positive Response
  • Hypo (or hyper) mobility as compared to adjacent segments
Technique
  • Patient sidelying
  • Place palpating finger on the posterior skin over two adjacent spinous processes
  • Hold patient's lower extremities as illustrated - hips and knees flexed 90o
  • Examiner induces lumbar forward bending by shifting her pelvis cephaled and caudal
  • Begin with lowest segment (L5-S1) an proceed cephaled to examine each segment
Comments
  • Be sure patient is relaxed (no muscle activity)
  • Patient's lumbar spine is neither rotated nor side bent
  • Patient's knees supported by examiner's cephaled inguinal or abdominal region - firmly support patient between palpating hand and inguinal region
  • Therapist supports feet as illustrated
  • Position table height so cephaled elbow is relaxed
