Areas Of Interest:

Mission and Identity

I have been interested in questions relating to the mission and identity of colleges and universities, especially of Jesuit and Catholic schools.  I have written several mission statements, and I have written on various aspects of the subject, starting with my days as a young faculty member, through my years as a dean, vice-president, and provost.  My recent membership on the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education focused that interest and resultled in a number of practical projects on such subjects as “hiring for mission” and “the core curriculum” in Jesuit universities.  I have also done some work on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition in the last few years.

Curriculum

I led two efforts to restructure the core curriculum at the University of Scranton—during the early 70’s and mid 90’s.  I also headed a curriculum revision project for the College of Arts and Sciences at Creighton University.  I have done research, writing, and consulting on the subject.

Planning

I devised planning proceeses and structures for my college at Creighton and for the entire university at Saint Joseph’s and Scranton (at several different time periods at Scranton, in fact.).  I have written and consulted on the subject, especially as planning relates to mission, resource allocation, and staff development.

Administrative, Staff, and Faculty Development

I established active, innovative, and successful faculty development programs at Scranton, Creighton, and Saint Joseph’s, and I have reported on these programs in various places and in a variety of ways.  I have also made professional presentations on various theories of faculty development, and was engaged in a continuing consulting project over several years at a neighboring university.

I have made presentations and written about the professional development of departmental chairpersons, and I have conducted a variety of workshops and training sessions for chairs.

I have hired about a dozen academic deans over the past twenty-three years, and assisted them in their professional development.  Several of them have gone on to vice-presidencies and presidencies.
