Nursing the Individual

Course Description:Focus is on the professional nurse's role as care-giver advocate and teacher in restoring the physiological and psychosocial adaptive responses of the individual experiencing alterations in the health patterns of self-perception-self-concept, sleep-rest and activity-exercise. Emphasis is placed on the planning and implementation of the nursing process in meeting heath needs.

Placement: Junior Year, Fall Semester

Prerequisites:Nursing 140, Nursing 260-261

Corequisites: Nursing 340, Nursing 360

Credits: Eight credits with three hours lecture and fifteen hours laboratory/week

Faculty:Dr. Margarete Zalon, RN, CS and Dr. Marian Farrell, RNC, CS, CRNP

Course Objectives:

1. Utilize the nursing process, with emphasis on the phases of assessing, diagnosing, planning and implementation, in providing nursing care to the client with alterations in the health patterns of activity-exercise, sleep-rest and self-perception-self-concept.

2. Apply communication principles in interaction with individual clients.

3. Develop a therapeutic rapport in interactions with individual clients.

4. Analyze the components of the illness experience and the adaptation of the client in the role of caregiver, advocate and teacher.

5. Utilize the principles of teaching and learning in the implementation of a client teaching plan.

6. Participate as a member of the nursing team to assist the client in the promotion and restoration of optimal health

7. Demonstrate responsibility and competency in the performance of selected health assessment and psychomotor skills.

8. Identify research findings applicable to the provision of professional nursing care to the client.

9. Recognize appropriate community resources in planning discharge for the client.

10. Establish priorities of health care in collaboration with the client.

11. Analyze one's own behavior and values in terms of their effect on therapeutic interactions with the client.

12. Demonstrate responsibility and accountability when rendering care to clients with alterations in health patterns.

13. Evaluate effectiveness of interactions in meeting the psychosocial and physical needs of clients.
