BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSAL:
Dexter Hanley College is the curricular unit responsible for this program. For a full description of the current program, please see page 322 in the 2000-2001 undergraduate catalog.

Between 1991 and 1999, 253 students graduated from Dexter Hanley College at the University of Scranton with a Liberal Studies degree. This degree’s elective areas of concentration attract adults who tailor a program of studies to a particular job situation, want to maximize transfer credits from a previous degree, or choose an interdisciplinary major not specifically offered at the University of Scranton.Through the past 21 years, the Liberal Studies degree has evolved into two distinct degrees, one with concentrations primarily in professional studies and the other with concentration areas in the Liberal Arts. For this reason, Hanley College now seeks to separate the degree into a BS Integrated Studies and the BA Liberal Studies.

The BS Integrated Studies would contain concentrations rooted in professional areas, allowing students to pursue separate but related concentrations such as business, communications, or computer science.Concentrations could also blend areas such as human services and psychology. It would be possible to incorporate one concentration of courses not offered at the University of Scranton, but transferred from a regionally accredited institution. This degree could partner with a two-year liberal arts degree taken at a junior college.

The BA Liberal Studies incorporates Liberal Arts courses into its concentration areas. These courses could cover areas such as art, theater, and mathematics. As with the BS Liberal Studies, concentrations could be blended and one concentration’s course work could be transferred from a regionally accepted institution. This degree could partner with two-year technical degree.

In both degrees, students would be encouraged to choose an internship reflecting the strongest area of concentration.

Acurriculum committee, appointed by the dean ofDHC, with faculty representation from each college and from DHC, will approve the students’ plans of study for the BSIS

Requirements:

The student will complete three resource areas with a total of 63 credits. Each area must contain no less than 15 credits and no more than 24 credits. This plan of study must be approved by DHC. The student must meet the University’s General Education requirements. The total program must containWRTG 211 Technical and Business Writing, COMM 214 Small Group Communication, and any college-level statistics course in the resource areas or the general education area..
