Volunteer Opportunities at Moses Taylor Hospital

Don't miss out on the great activities that Cassie has set up for HPO!
Remember, being an active member will help you in the long run.

Here is the 2007-2008 Service Interest Form. Fill this out and return it to Cassie at an HPO meeting to get matched with a service opportunity that will best fit you.

Why Do Service?

Service is an essential part of your undergraduate experience. First and foremost, volunteering will open your eyes to the plight of those most desperately in need and help you to realize what is truly important in your life. You will witness the poverty and need in the Scranton area or, if you so choose, across the nation and abroad. You might gain exposure to such groups as the mentally ill, the elderly, children, and disabled populations. You might choose medically related service or something completely unrelated to health care. Regardless of the type of service you choose, make sure you follow your passions. Get to know yourself a little bit in the process of choosing a service site. Discover what issues you feel strongly about, pinpoint your interests, and make use of your talents. If you are excited about your service, you will enrich the lives of others while simultaneously enriching your own life. It is important to try out different service sites, get a feel for what you like, and then make a committment.

There will also be several opport unities for long-term service. We would like the HPO to contribute a significiant group to the HELP (Hospital Elder Life Program) program and for member to help at the St. Mary's Villa Residence. HELP needs hospice volunteers at Moses Taylor hospital to visit with the elderly, spend meaningful time with them, and aid in other activities. St. Mary's Villa need volunteers to lead elderly residents through music and art therapy sessions. If you would like more information, please stop by the Center for Social Action and Service Initiatives (CSASI) or get in touch with me. In addition, we will be continuing our partnership with the Scranton Public Health Clinic. This requires that the HPO sends students to the clinic every day for one-hour blocks of time (or longer if you are so inclined). Please sign up on the sheet hung outside of the Center for Social Action and Service Initiatives.

International service opportunities will also be avaible through the MAC's medical mission to Haiti over Christmas break and the international service trips run through Campus Ministries (ISP Mexico and Ecuador). If you have any questions about international trip you may contact CSASI.

Feel free to stop into the University of Scranton Community Outreach Office (it's a very friendly office) often and e-mail or call me at any time. Also keep in mind that the rest of your HPO officers are excellent service resources! They have all had unique service experiences so make sure you ask them to share with you.
