What to do prior to arriving on campus:
- Purchase a Windows XP or Vista Computer
- Install Windows Critical Updates
- Windows Update is a free Microsoft website where you can install security updates to help protect your computer from viruse, worms,vulnerabilities, and other threats.
- How to Install Windows Updates:
- Launch Internet Explorer browser and go to www.windowsupdate.com
- Click Express
- Click Download & Install Now
- You may see a dialog box asking you to restart your computer after the installation has finished.
- Continue until there are no further updates to install.
- Install Anti-Spyware/Adware Removal Tools
- Spyware and Adware were the two of the biggest problems on ResNet last year. Spyware is software installed on computers without the user's knowledge that gathers information about you. Adware is software that displays advertising banners and redirects you to websites. To protect your computer, install AND run Spybot and Ad-aware and update both regularly.
- Remove Norton Anti-Virus Software (and any other anti-virus package on your computer) just prior to arriving on campus.
- Disable Peer-to-Peer applications such as Ares,, BitTorrent, LimeWire, Kazaa, and Gnutella. File sharing and downloading of copyright materials is illegal and will not be permitted on campus.
- Check your University E-mail for resNet updates.
