Setting Up Your Computer

Windows Vista

ResNet is The University of Scranton's dedicated network that provides direct access to the Internet and campus data services for students residing in University housing. ResNet is a free service for University students.

Information Resources has implemented measures to make our student residential network (ResNet) more secure from viruses and worms that can damage student's computers and the network. In order to connect a computer to our network, all students will be required to validate and authenticate themselves using their e-mail username and password. As a result, student computers will need to meet the following requirements in order to log-on:

  1. Windows Vista operating system
  2. University's version of McAfee anti-virus software (provided free by Information Resources)
  3. Latest Microsoft Critical Updates installed (students can obtain these updates free from Microsoft at www.windowsupdate.com)

Network access with be automatically provided to users that meet these requirements, while users that have infected or compromised machines will have limited network access and will be guided through steps to rectify their problems in a very efficient way. While we are protecting your system from viruses and hacking, we are NOT monitoring internet activity in any way.

Before You Begin:

For access to University of Scranton Web-based resources you should use Internet Explorer browser (version 6.0 SP1 or higher). You can check your version of Internet Explorer by starting it and selecting Help>>About Internet Explorer from the menu.

  4. It will help to identify your network adapter by looking for the manufacturer's name and the name of the adapter You can get this information from the documentation that came with your computer or from the box the network adapter came in
  5. Once you have identified the connection for your network adapter, right-click on that connection

  2. Enter your E-mail username and E-mail password and Click Login
  3. Please note that throughout the process, you may be asked to confirm certificates. Please click OK

Once you have authenticated, you will be prompted to download the Clean Access client. All Windows computers are required to install the Clean Access client software to connect to the university network.

Client Login:

The client will require that you authenticate again using the same E-mail username and E-mail password. At this time, the client will validate your settings.

  1. Right-click the Clean Access icon in the system tray (in the lower right hand corner of your screen)
  2. Click login from the pop-up menu

Validation:

We have configured Clean Access to check certain security settings on any Microsoft Windows PC to make sure that the system is up-to-date with required security patches, critical updates, service pack levels, and Anti-virus definitions.

Pass - If you pass successfully, Click OK when you get the message "Successfully logged in to the network" and will have normal access to the network.

Fail - If the validation tests fail, your connection will be placed in quarantine mode and allowed temporary access to the network to correct the problem. Clean Access will list the failed checks and walk you through the process of updating your computer. Once you have corrected the problem, you will be able to complete the validation process and have normal access to the network.

Responsible Computing:

Once a ResNet connection is established, each student must abide by all rules and regulations associated with the use of Scranton's network. These include state and federal laws as well as University of Scranton regulations specified in the Student Computing Policy available at http://www.scranton.edu/helpdesk/studentpolicy.html

Spyware and Adware:

Spyware is software installed on computers without the user's knowledge that gathers information about you, your browsing habits, as well as other data. Adware is software that displays advertising banners and re-directs you to websites.
