Letter from Dean Mensah

Dear KSOM students:

Congratulations on being admitted to the Kania School of Management at The University of Scranton.  As Dean of your business school, I am very proud of the quality of education we offer and the national recognition we have earned in such publications as US News and World Report and The Princeton Review. Our very successful alumni praise us for our continuously improved programs, as well as the ethics and technological skills we emphasize daily in and out of class.  You have made an excellent choice.
The University of Scranton is committed to providing students with the tools necessary to learn and develop technology skills they will use both inside and outside the classroom, thus preparing them for living and learning in today’s world.  In our effort to make our graduates even more competitive, the University is introducing a required laptop program for all incoming freshmen students planning to major or complete a minor in the Kania School of Management.  Use of a laptop has become an integral part of the business school curriculum, keeping our students current with today’s business trends and proficient in the utilization of innovative technology.

All freshmen enrolled in the Kania School of Management for the fall of 2009 are required to have a laptop that meets the KSOM minimum requirements.  If you bring a PC from home, it needs to meet these requirements:
Minimum Laptop Requirements:

Vista Business
Intel Core2 Duo 2.4GHz processor
2GB RAM (memory)
160 GB Hard Drive
DVD +/- RW
802.11 a/g/n wireless card
Microsoft Office 2007 Professional
We provide a University version of McAfee Anti-Virus software
Anti-Spyware software (free from Internet)

If you chose to buy a new PC, through Dell, we have been able to make available to our students the Latitude business-class series of laptops for our KSOM Laptop Program.  Latitudes offer better performance and stability than the consumer-class Inspiron series you see advertised on TV.   We are offering several laptop choices that meet both your personal and campus technology needs.  Full details, pricing, and purchasing options for these laptops can be found at www.scranton.edu/resnet.  You are not required to purchase one of these specially configured laptops, but you do need to bring a laptop that meets the minimum requirements listed above.  The program is required for freshmen KSOM students, but is open to all students enrolled in KSOM, CAS, CPS, and CGCE colleges.

Purchasing one of the special Dell laptops will give you the following additional benefits:

Exclusive Scranton pricing on Dell computers
On-campus warranty support
On-site parts for quick turnaround times
Pre-Configured image that can be quickly restored
Certified technicians for fast repair
Free loaners if student’s laptops have to be sent out for repair
4 Year CompleteCare Accidental Damage coverage

We have configured the Latitudes with the hardware, software, and warranty that will last throughout your four years at Scranton at a discounted price.  If you choose to take advantage of these attractive offers, you can purchase online at www.scranton.edu/resnet.  A Dell Rep will be available at Preview Day for Accepted Students on Saturday, April 4th and at Summer Orientation in July to demo the laptops available through this program.
Questions should be directed to our Technology Support Center (941-HELP). A list of helpful FAQ’s can be found on our website www.scranton.edu/resnet.
Again, congratulations and thank you for choosing The University of Scranton.

Sincerely,

Michael O. Mensah, Ph.D.
Dean
