Residential Network (ResNet) users are extremely vulnerable to Microsoft Security Vulnerabilities. All students connected to the ResNet network MUST install Windows Critical Updates and implement Windows Automatic Updates to protect your own computer as well as the overall speed and functionality of ResNet.
New vulnerabilities are found weekly and it's important to keep up with the latest Critical Updates. Follow the procedures below to keep your computer working properly and connected to the Internet:
Launch Internet Explorer web browser
Click Tools
Click Express Install
Click Install
Repeat steps 1 thru 4 until there are no further Critical Updates to install. You may need to do this several times.
You should take advantage of Windows Automatic Updates which can automatically download the latest Microsoft Security updates while your computer is on and connected to the internet. Follow the instructions below to turn on Automatic Updates for your operating system:
Windows Vista users:
Click Start, and then click Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance (If the Performance and Maintenance category isn't visible, click Switch to Category View on the upper left of the window)
Click System to open the System Properties dialog box.
On the Automatic Updates tab check Keep my computer up to date....
Click Download the updates automatically and notify me when they are ready to be installed
Click OK
After you have setup Automatic Updates, you will see a notification balloon like the one below when new updates are ready to be installed. Click the notification balloon to install the downloads.
You MUST protect your computer from the thousands of computer viruses released into the internet each year. To connect to Resnet, you MUST be running the University's version of McAfee. We provide McAfee free to all University students. If you need a CD with McAfee contact the HelpDesk at 941-HELP.
