Verona, E., Hicks, B. M., and Patrick, C. J. (2005). Psychopathy and
suicidality in female offenders: Mediating influences of personality
and abuse [Electronic Version]. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 73(6), 1065-1073.
This article served two purposes.
The first was to build upon research that already exists by studying
whether psychopathic personality traits rather than behavior correlated
to suicidal behavior in women. The second was to study common risk
factors found in women for suidical behavior. Each female inmate was
asked about their suicide attempt history, their personal abuse
history, and were then given a personality test (MPQ). The results
showed that the personality test revealed a relationship between the
inmates' suicide attempts and their deviant behavior, while a history
of sexual abuse did not effect personality.
I found this study interesting
because it attempted to examine the cause of behavior of a group of
people, inmates, with whom many people chose not to associate. This
study helps to show that there is a link between a female's past and
deviant behavior rather than a female simply committing a crime because
she is "bad". I believe that if research of this nature continues, it
could help to reduce crime.
