A German engineered freezing microtome was used to create coronal sections of the mouse brain. The brain was then stained using cresyl violet. Cresyl violet is used to stain Nissl material - endoplasmic reticulum and ribosomes that occur in nerve cell bodies and dendrites. A coronal section using this stain can be seen on the left.
